How legitimate are any discs out there, really?

It's a much bigger problem for all systems past the Dreamcast (actually including the PSX and Saturn), since proto/beta/review games tend to come on generic burnable media - this seems to reduce the price substantially as a result. In this case the fact that they were burned onto GDR media made them seem unquestionably legit, but as you say, with the right impetus (financial) even GDRs can be faked. I did question this back in January when he posted about his paypal woes from sales of copies of this beta, but nobody seemed concerned at the time. I'm glad it's now being taken seriously, but mostly I'm just sad about the whole affair. Such a shame.

As far as the ban goes, if I ever sold such items (or had the audacity to try and flog them here) I would expect a ban. I mean, honestly, this stuff is elementary - anyone who has the wherewithal to purchase a Dreamcast dev kit, GDR burner & media and knows how to use them obviously knows exactly what they're doing.

Difficult one to deal with, if a user intended to sell a fake as legit then a ban would be expected.

Take into account that raylyd has Asperger's, and he has been helpful in the past, and the issue becomes a bit more complicated.

The main question here is, was Ray fully aware of what he was doing?

Didn't he freely release a beta from an Xbox debug kit a while back?
That doesn't excuse his actions, but it shows that he's not motivated by making a quick buck.

A total ban seems a bit extreme given the circumstances, maybe a temporary marketplace ban would be more appropriate until such time as he understands the problem and puts things right.

Listen guys. Ray has done a lot for our community. He is a good person and if you have ever dealt with him then you would agree that he is good people. Can we cut him some slack and quit the flaming for the sake of flaming? If you have a problem with him then take it up in pm's. I do understand what you're saying and also your position on this subject.

if i get the discs back i may give them to a lucky member here. i am not sure yet what lucky member will get this yet even if i get my discs back.

One could only be so "lucky" as to pay $500 for something worth the cost of one blank disk, while the original maintains all the real value (maybe slightly diminished by the fact that "copies" now float about)

Lucky doesn't begin to describe the feelings that would evoke.

One more thing i would never dream of being a scammer or scamming anyone.

Then you even cried about being out a shipping cost when a buyer inevitably had buyers remorse (who wouldn't when they pay out the ass for something that cost you one blank media and a few min of your time)

^^ these patterns and behaviors do seem to be repetitive, or at least till the blanks run out. And if it continues I'm 100% sure more difficulties in social interaction will ensue. Do it to someone local and they might even give you some real "interaction".

Fun story:

Anyone here know the name MetaFox?

Few years back he ran a lot of different shows around the Dreamcast scene. A few years back he got pre-orders for what I want to say was DreamOn Magazine Volume 2 but don't quote me on that as I can't find anything for sure. He got something like $1,200 in pre-orders.

A month went by. Then two. Then several more. Finally he came clean and said that all of the delays were because he was in extremely bad financial situations and essentially had embezzled the money. Gave everyone a refund, public apology and I've not seen very much of him in the last 4-5 years at all. No charges were ever filed and he basically got away with it but I hold no hard feelings towards the guy as I knew him pretty well.

Having aspergers though is never an excuse for anything. I was diagnosed as having it in the early 90s and my mother made sure I never thought it was acceptable to use it as an excuse for any behavior. Turns out it was a bad diagnosis and I was just being a kid on top of the syndrome being poorly understood back in 1994 or so. Life sucks sometimes, but scamming someone in such a way is fucked up.

I've always wondered if anyone would ever try something like this knowing full well they could make oodles off reproduction Propeller Arena discs by comparison to the cost of the raw materials. Guess we have an answer.

I'm a SEGA Fan and collector and I don't really care about those fakes. For me it's important to have the original, the other one honestly I had preferred to have blank GD-R but I see them as a gift (as also stated by Raylyd). I would have marked them anyway and so I will do if Raylyd didn't marked them. But to threaten for a ban is just childish and ridicolous.
