Third blast at reactor #2, and they said there has been damage to the reactor. Apparently some employees have been evacuated due to increasing radiation. There is also a fire in reactor #4.

    Cesium, its whats for breakfast.

I'm curious as to when the locals (here on the North American West coast) will start freaking out over this news and start canceling school or at least distributing iodine tablets.

It's just me or the whole news media are crazy about the whole nuclear situation? All they talk about is the possibility of a disaster. There's always a specialist on this or that, saying something is being done wrong or right...

Damn, i hate all that kind of "news". The people are working to contain the whole problem, yet the news media appears to want something bad happening... They hire one or two experts and then they think they can talk like they work with that for years. Hello, you don't know shit!

They should only talk about it, when there's actually any news or info about it.

One news around here, from GloboTV, even bothered to compare the Fukushima Daich plant with the Angra plant (in Rio de Janeiro). Yeah, right. We have 2 old nuclear reactors that only produce 2,5% of the energy needed for the whole state of Rio de Janeiro... We sure can compare / criticize Japan nuclear technology and expertise...

Anyway, what pisses me of is that the most important thing right now are the missing people and destroyed cities. They should be informing people how they can help in any way possible.

Anyone within 30km of the plant is advised to stay indoors to avoid radiation sickness. Not a good sign.

As I said before, I'd be getting as far away as possible. Incidentally, are plane tickets selling out as fast as groceries, or are people still under the impression that everything will be OK?

    Incidentally, some stats for you:

    Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant
    Unit 1 - 460 MW BWR-3 reactor (damaged)
    Unit 2 - 784 MW BWR-4 reactor (damaged)
    Unit 3 - 784 MW BWR-4 reactor (damaged)
    Unit 4 - 784 MW BWR-4 reactor
    Unit 5 - 784 MW BWR-4 reactor
    Unit 6 - 1,100 MW BWR-5 reactor

    Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
    Unit 1 - 1000 MW RBMK-1000 reactor, 1st gen.
    Unit 2 - 1000 MW RBMK-1000 reactor, 1st gen.
    Unit 3 - 1000 MW RBMK-1000 reactor, 2nd gen.
    Unit 4 - 1000 MW RBMK-1000 reactor, 2nd gen. (destroyed by meltdown)

Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station
    Unit 1 - 802 MW PWR reactor
Unit 2 - 906 MW PWR reactor (damaged by partial meltdown)

So you can see that the reactors in each plant are actually all quite different (although RBMK reactors are basically a type of BWR). It's probably a good thing that the plant uses Boiling Water Reactors, not Pressurized Water Reactors. I'm no expert in nuclear power stations, but I assume that the reactors producing less power is probably a sign that they use less radioactive material? That said, if Units 1, 2 and 3 = 2 Chernobyl units, that doesn't sound good!

Retro the designs of those power plants are so different you cannot compare.

Chernobyl had no reactor core housing around it, and the control rods were lowered in, not raised up like in Japan.

I would advise anyone in the 30 km region to flee, as cesium and such will give you
    bad thyroid cancer.

If it's any consolation, we do the same thing in Australia for the same reason. If you lived in England during the mad cow disease risk period, you can't donate blood in Australia.

A quick google search seems to suggest that Irelend and the USA also restrict blood donations from people who were in the UK during the mad cow disease risk period.

I see a lot of pictures of empty konbinis and groceries in Tokyo. I called my friend who lives in Ichikawa (Chiba) which is near the border of Tokyo. He says his groceries and konbinis have normal stock. I guess the food scarcity outside of Tohoku/Northern Kantou is not as bad as people make it out to be...OR it could just be his area that hasn't been hit...yet.

Agreed. These fuck faces are showing little concern or care for first and foremost, the fucking people in the danger zones, both supposed and actual; And second, journalism. I'll shove their ratings up their dick holes if I get the chance.

I believe even the cocks in the media agree that Chernobyl was missing the necessary apparatus for containment that Fukushima has.

It seems even more people in my student dormatory have chosen to flee the country. By my count, there will only be 3 of us left in this building (excluding the Japanese students who are just getting on with things), I'm beginning to wonder if I'm being a bit too relaxed about it all. I hadn't even considered leaving since I live way out in Kyoto, and don't plan to... but I seem to be the only one right now.

Nevertheless i feel people should be more alarmed and aware... i think the japanese gov. it's minimizing too much the situation.

i would have evacuated for a far bigger distance.

Most of my friends have gone at least down to your neck of the woods. I'm thinking of going just out of sheer boredom.
