Bad but still not as bad as it could be.

And everyone's whale boat ramming favorite:

    Someone who has a botnet.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...googlenews_wsj

"As long as there's no meltdown of the fuel rods, you're in good shape," said Kirby Kemper, a nuclear physicist at Florida State University. But if pressure from gases in the nuclear core builds up, "a crack could appear in the containment vessel and release radiation," he added.
It would appear these news agencies like to write articles without bothering to check if what they quote is even relevant.

Nobody is talking about the real threat....If Video games and anime have taught me nothing else it's that disasters usually awaken Demons.... There's gonna be one really pissed off Oni waking up soon.

I'm scared to death... and I don't even live in the same hemisphere...

I really hope everyone is Ok....

The guys from Sendai are probably cut off from communications. If things there were as bad as everyone says (and by the looks of it, it's hell on earth) then probably communications must be off limits for regular people.

I guess we'll have to wait a couple of hours/days to know if they're alright

It is unfortunate but we are powerless against the forces of nature. It's also ironic how because it struck a rich country, not the usual poor ones, this doubles the risk by opening pandora's box of radioactivity out of its crusty thin shackles.

So, why can't they use liquid nitrogen to cool down the reactors? Can someone please explain?

Wii's Disaster: Day of Crisis foretold this and I have a feeling there's going to be a Fallout game about this someday!

Perhaps due to it cooling the materials too quickly and causing further damage? Also, it doesnt exactly hang around long, since it'd boil off really quickly.

    That's a T-shirt worthy quote. ;)

Transportation I think? They're using sea water and not "normal" water for some reason. CNN quoted some one as saying it's a "hail mary" which doesn't exactly arouse confidence.

Has anyone tried to find the Japanese members who haven't checked in yet through the Google crisis response system?

    Specifically, the Person finder.

I don't know the names and last names of all the members.... But maybe it would be nice if some of us did a few searches just to be sure..

    Well the reactors:

They are hot water reactors, the water is used to make power and keep the cores cool.

The tsunami destroyed the generators, the backup turbines, and they ran on battery
    cooling unit that ran out.

Unit 1, the steam shed (turbine) burst and now they have no cooling, and the water jacket around the reactor fell.

The cooling inside the reactor was fine, but pressure built.

Now they have water covering the core in unit 1, but units 2,3 have
    no cooling.

In short three of four reactors might overheat, and they might have to release the
steam into the air which will have some radiation.

The will keep pumping water in to cool the cores (no meltdown) but radiation steam
from the cooling will be released into the air.

The rods inside have damage, so in the end all the reactors will need to be torn down, and new power plant built at costs of some billions.

As a result the reactors which provide some 35% of power won;t work, so russia is rushing emergency LPG to Japan to make the gas power plants supplied.

    Bad bad times.

    Press Release (Mar 13,2011)
Plant Status of Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station (as of 2:00am March 13th)
There is no update from the release issued at 1:00 am Unit 1 (shut down at 2:48pm on March 11th) - Reactor is shut down and reactor water level is stable. - Offsite power is available. - At 8:19am, there was an alarm indicating that one of the control rods was not properly inserted, however, at 10:43am the alarm was spontaneously called off. Other control rods has been confirmed that they are fully inserted (reactor is in subcritical status) - Status of main steam isolation valve: closed - Injection of water into the reactor is done by Make-up Water Condensate System. - At 6:08pm, we announced the increase in reactor containment vessel pressure, assumed to be due to leakage of reactor coolant. However, we do not believe there is leakage of reactor coolant in the containment vessel at this moment. - At 5:22am, the temperature of the suppression chamber exceeded 100 degrees. As the reactor pressure suppression function was lost, at 5:22am, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in article 15, clause 1 has occurred. - We decided to prepare implementing measures to reduce the pressure of the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing radioactive materials) in order to fully secure safety. This preparation work started at around 9:43am and finished at 6:00pm. - Restoration work in reactor cooling function is in progress to achieve reactor cold shutdown. Unit 2 (shut down at 2:48pm on March 11th) - Reactor is shut down and reactor water level is stable. - Offsite power is available. - Control rods are fully inserted (reactor is in subcritical status) - Status of main steam isolation valve: closed - Injection of water into the reactor is done by Make-up Water Condensate System. - We do not believe there is leakage of reactor coolant in the containment vessel. - At 5:32am, the temperature of the suppression chamber exceeded 100 degrees. As the reactor pressure suppression function was lost, at 5:32am, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in article 15, clause 1 has occurred. - We decided to prepare implementing measures to reduce the pressure of the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing radioactive materials) in order to fully secure safety. This preparation work started at around 10:33am and finished at 10:58pm. - Restoration work in reactor cooling function is in progress to achieve reactor cold shutdown. Unit 3 (shut down at 2:48pm on March 11th) - Reactor is shut down and reactor water level is stable. - Offsite power is available. - Control rods are fully inserted (reactor is in subcritical status) - Status of main steam isolation valve: closed - We do not believe there is leakage of reactor coolant in the containment vessel. - We decided to prepare implementing measures to reduce the pressure of the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing radioactive materials) in order to fully secure safety. The preparation woke started at around 12:08pm and finished at 12:13pm. - Reactor cold shutdown at 12:15pm Unit 4 (shut down at 2:48pm on March 11th) - Reactor is shut down and reactor water level is stable. - In order to cool down the reactor, injection of water into the reactor had been done by the Reactor Core Isolation Cooling System, however, At 6:07am, the temperature of the suppression chamber exceeded 100 degrees. As the reactor pressure suppression function was lost, at 6:07am, it was determined that a specific incident stipulated in article 15, clause 1 has occurred. - We decided to prepare implementing measures to reduce the pressure of the reactor containment vessel (partial discharge of air containing radioactive materials) in order to fully secure safety. The preparation woke started at around 11:44am and finished at around 11:52am. - Restoration work in reactor cooling function is in progress to achieve reactor cold shutdown. Indication from monitoring posts installed at the site boundary did not show any difference from ordinary level. No radiation impact to the external environment has been confirmed. We will continue to monitor in detail the possibility of radioactive material being discharged from exhaust stack or discharge canal.

The BBC are reporting that it's a mixture of sea water and boron.
