Thread: 3DS Japan launch

Your right about seeing in 3D, I should have come used a better comparison when looking away from the unit. How about forced 3D from a technical device back to where your eyes don't have to work for the 3D.

I wonder if the kiosks are set up in such a way that your always in a sweet spot of the 3D, like the angle of it maybe, since some in this thread said the 3D can be tough to find at times.

Am I the only one expecting the inevitable 3D porn that will be made with these units?:p The demographic is wrong but they have been given all the right tools.. I wonder how long before we hear it on the news!

You can ask for any old woman
You can ask for an army of ants
You can ask for a pillar of poison
You can ask for sheep and shavers

    And you can die for
Be careful what you wish for

So it's confirmed it's region locked?

EDITED: Nevermind, it's confirmed. Bad move from Nintendo.

Is Aliasing less noticable in 2D mode?

And did you ever play with the Solid eye that came with Metal gear ac!d 2?(the way you talk, the aliasing in 3D sounds about the same as MGA2 with the 3D glasses.)

I am also appalled that only in a few screenshots of games i've seen that there is a huge lack of AA. The performance hit from AA well optimized these days is minimal and there is no reason not to have it.

It's one of things i've hated about Square enix and the way it advertises it's PSP games with screenshots that are obviously (Most likely) Downsampled like crazy. And look smooth as butter, but when you actually play the games they are Aliasing messes. >:(

    Yeah, I'm certain of that.

But with the eye problems, I was seeing depth with a sort of blur and distortion. I wasn't sensing distances properly, and was not perceiving depth the way it should be perceived.

It was more Virtual Boy than 3DS for me, heh.

Now, I'm getting used to the new prescription, but it's really interesting how the clarity of things affects depth perception. I'm sure this will be a factor in my enjoyment of all that newfangled 3D tech.

Having depth perception is awesome, and it's pretty cool that mine works. I have a friend that doesn't have it (yet he's a better player and a better driver than I)

So I tried a demo unit today at my local Best Buy store.
The 3D does indeed work well (I tried the Pilotwings game briefly) but the 'sweet spot' is quite small. Sort of reminds me of struggling with finding the perfect contrast level back in 1989 with the original green & black Gameboy.

Looks nice, but I won't be buying it. I suspect this thing is giong to cause all kinds of eye strain related problems.

I played this for about 20 minutes today at Best Buy. Had the 3D up to 75% on Pilotwings Resort and I got absolutely no eyestrain. When I turned the 3D up to 100% I just had trouble focusing, but no headaches or discomfort.

You know, I bet in a few years they'll probably make a 3DS that can sense the position of your eyes and adapt to it. Panasonic already makes a TV that does this (although it's really complicated and expensive), but one would think that in a few years it might be affordable. It kinda seems inevitable, actually. Depending on how the 3DS is received, of course.

at CeBit I was more impressed by the 3DS than that Playstation phone thingy. I wasnt able to play long but I realy like it, 75% was for me also a good setting.
1 thing, I wanted to touch the 3d screen XD

I suppose they could potentially use Kinect-esque technology to achieve this.

You need not only that, but also an adaptive parallax barrier. I'm not entirely sure how it works with the Panasonic TV, but I'm guessing the barrier is just a transparent LCD on top of the main LCD. The slits (I think it's actually more like a checkerboard pattern with the Panasonic TV) change their position depending on where your eyes are, so each eye is seeing the correct image. I'm guessing the 3DS has a static parallax barrier.

I got my unit yesterday along with Pilotwings and Streetfighter. I have to say the 3D effects are brilliant, especially in pilot wings it really adds to the gameplay. I have noticed that after 20-30minutes i start to feel a little bit sick so i guess that's my limit with which i'm happy seeing as i wear pretty strong glasses.

Also just did the first firmware update which added supposedly better wifi and a 3D demo movie which is a nice touch when you want to show off the 3D to someone.

Overall i'm quite happy but the only major drawback is the horrible battery life. Using 3D all the time, leaving on wifi and streetpass and the like makes it last about 3.5-4 hours =/
