PlayStations sold a lot and are very common in flea markets, it is cheaper and easier to buy another PS1 and keep the old one for spare parts, instead of spending $5 on a spindle hub, while you are going to spend $5 on another perfectly working PlayStation. It is not a console like the CD-i, etc. where spare parts are hard to find and so spending a little extra is perfectly justified.
Just my two cents.
P.S.: I understand your side of the coin, but that's life.
