Good Free program for graphic art/3d computer images?????

anyone have any info on a good computer graphics design program for starters preferably for free or inexpensive....it's something I'd like to start working on soon and wanted to get my feet wet....might need to be older program as I'll be using two computers, the lesser of which only has 256 megs of ram...don't wanna pop for another new computer just yet....I know maya offers a trial of their stuff but they require 512 of ram....
    thanks in advance

RU a student? If so, get the educational version of Photoshop. They're extremely cheap. If not, get GIMP. It's free, and very good.

Paint Shop Pro's also pretty decent - I've been using it for years!

The educational version of Photoshop, while discounted, is anything but cheap - still either $199 or $299. GIMP is nice to use, and is actually very powerful (plus, there's a decent release for Windows) but if you can afford it, Photoshop is the way to go.

As far as 3d goes, there are several decent ones - Milkshape 3d was initially designed to be an editing tool for Half-Life but has since grown to encompass a huge variety of formats. An excellent all-around free modeller is Blender, and it can also do animation and even some rudimentary game design (though I have never messed with that part). Also, the Maya Personal Learning Edition is excellent if you want to start using the program but can't afford the cost - it's full featured, the only difference being that it watermarks any images and videos you render. There's even a decent amount of tutorial and help files available for the PLE.
    Hope this helps! :smt023

Kyuusaku's method is doable (that's what I did). WHat you usually get is some REALLY old version + an upgrade. It's technically legal.

The educational version of Lightwave 8 is somewhat expensive but REALLY worth it. For 2D imaging, you'll need "The GIMP", which is somewhat similar to Photoshop only free.
You can get Blender (I still have to learn how to use that one. Too used to LW) which is also free.
