PS2 Replacement Parts and Cleaning

Hello everyone, I got a cheap PS2 the other day, it was sold to me as defective (it didn't turn on), but since it was so cheap I decided to grab it (I assumed it was some fuse or some crap like that).

So, I got home with the PS2 and tested it, the red light turned on, but as expected, it didn't turn green when I pressed the Power/Reset button. I opened up the thing and started to disassemble it, the DVD unit was in perfect shape thankfully, but the motherboard was missing the screws on the metal shielding! I ignored that for a minute, and started testing every fuse, but they were fine, so I decided to take a look at the flex cables, and the Reset/Cable was destroyed! (Some pins worked, but others didn't)

I've alredy ordered the flex cables that I needed, but I can't find screw replacements for the Motherboard Shielding, does anyone know of a place that sells screw replacements for the PS2?

About the cleaning part, the PS2 case didn't look good when I bought it, I've alredy tried to clean it, but it still looks "dirty", What do you recommend me to do to clean the plastic case of the PS2?

If you have a sample of the screw that you need take it to a hardware store. They will measure it and find a appropriate replacement.

Don't some Mod chip websites also sell replacement Shells for PS2's?

I don't think they are generally the standard Matte black(IIRC they are usually some obvious "Oh hey i'm modded" color like transparent blue and so forth, one of my PSX's has a transparent white case)

The shielding honestly is likely there just to pass FCC requirements. Way back in the day they were more necessary to get a decent picture from the RF modulator but now with the signal being digital with error detection/correction it's less a requirement for it to simply operate.

Now if you took the shielding off and put it into an extremely noisy RF environment such as one with a microwave featuring bad shielding, arc welders, particle accelerators and even electric motors going bad you might find it acting extremely weird and even lock up often.

Sometimes even a tiny amount of noise will screw something up. Supposedly Virtua Racing for the Genesis would lock up because of cordless phones of that era and cause issues to the phones right on back. Never could substantiate the claims but there is a large piece of metal inside that could be a shield or heatsink. Rather poor design for either though.

The main problem is that the CPU/GPU heatsink is in the shielding, and for some stupid reason, the previous owner decided that it was "fun" to cut the right side of both heatsinks. I don't really care about the RF stuff.

Be careful and cut a ribbon cable from something else (like a computer CD drive) to have seven traces, so that the seven pins used for the power/reset/eject buttons can work. Worked wondefully for me. Sadly my PS2 then died due to me inverting ground and +12v on its "replacement" power supply. Build quality is not great, they could have implemented more safety checks in the circuit, but it's called PlayStation 2 anyway, so they thought who would care about the build quality.

don't suppose you have spare V7 ps2 lasers?

The v7 has two different laser models; the KHS-400C, and the HD7. You will need to replace wth the type that you already have. Which is yours?

Cool info. I am thinking about getting my ps2 fixed. It works great, but the dvd drive is a bit slow (Metal Gear Solid 3 lags like 3 or 4 seconds :/), slower than usual from wear and tear -which is why I have a hard drive for it. Mine is a V9 or V10 model, fat ps2.

These are repairable if you have the proper solder sucker tool to separate the PCB from the mechanical assembly.

If a controller with shorted wire blew one of the protection zener diodes, you just need to replace it.


Btw, laser pickups are recyclable and fix them at home is doable...
