I resoldered using wires and now it flashes red. Lame.
An exchange isn't necessary. I probably killed this one and your price is excellent. I would feel like a jerk if I exchanged it.

do me a favor and post a picture in macro mode of the front and back.
Those atmel chips are near indestructible so probably can be fixed
Using bare wires is definitely a no no, shorting can almost be guaranteed. It also looks like you need to practice your soldering.
Flashing Red is bad - not a solid connection to the board - all red, still bad, the drive isn't receiving the code from the chip properly. Red, then orange means that it all went well and the drive is patched+ready.
Also, when using enamel covered wires, you really have to make sure that you strip the enamel off the ends properly. You can do this using a hot blob of solder on the end of a soldering iron and slowly passing the end of the wire through it.

Something is wrong with the chip.
I used an integrity checker(What are those things called?) to make sure the connections were good.
I checked all 4 legs. I put one leg of the tester on the ram chip of the drive, the other on the corresponding leg on the Xeno chip. The solder points were good.
I bought 2 more. I just need to get them installed.
I'm not trying to offend you, but if that's your level of soldering skill you should
invest in some flux. That's a pretty horrible mod.
No offense taken. I have no illusions about my level of skill.
That's one of the reason I didn't want to exchange mine. Honestly, its hard to imagine any chip surviving a battle with my 30W iron.
I will buy some flux next time I'm at the store. I'm not in any hurry to get it modded.
Eep. 30w.
I mean I typically run my iron on a 1-5 level on 5 but I know what I'm doing (more than a decade of practice). The chip is probably salvageable unless you fried the poor thing completely.
Speaking as someone with fairly poor soldering skills. Isn't it better to just use some wire glue? Sure it isn't as good/pretty as a good solder job, but you'll never cook anything, and it takes forever to dry so you can play with it as much as you need. Everything I've destroyed before would've easily worked had I discovered the stuff 15 years ago
I would like to offer presoldered chips but I just realized it will set probably result in a seized package. (loose wires look suspicious)

If someone can link me to a good tutorial (with pictures) on how to install this. I'll buy it right now. I've soldered before but I'm a novice.
Also, what else can I do besides play DVD-/+R mini's? My friend just linked me to this and I'm looking for a cheap way to revitalize my gamecube. Sounds like an awesome weekend project.
Edit: Screw it I'll take one anyway.

I come off as an arrogant jerk sometimes, feel free to bring me back down to level when that happens; however, it's not intentional most of the time.
