Just after midnight on September 25th in Hyogo prefecture in western Japan, a two-lane highway was the scene of a really strange and potentially perilous accident involving a load of mayonnaise (dozens of 500 gram bottles) that fell off the back of a lorry. An eight-car pile-up that left three people injured, the accident involved a motorcycle, two trucks and five cars.
Fortunately, none of the injuries were serious, but the many bottles were scattered over a 3.5-kilometer (2.2 miles) stretch of a two-lane highway. The mixed ingredients of eggs, vinegar and oil became a huge oil slick more dangerous than snow, causing a shut down for more than five hours.
“What probably happened is that cars traveling behind the truck squashed the bottles of mayonnaise, spreading it on the road…We are still looking for the driver of the truck,” said police official Masaaki Miyazaki.
It is believed that the driver of the truck did not realize that the load he was carrying was scattering all over the road, placing all those drivers behind him in imminent peril.
