    1) cart case modification will be more easy

2)pcb inside a case is little twisted because face side of cart have not enough sopce for button, lack 0.5mm aprox

I voted 'not need' since I have never used it.

However, it might be good if two solder pads could be left on Everdrive PCB so people could glue button to empty space in game casing and solder wire to PCB if they want it?

Also, maybe replace button with USB port like SNES Everdrive?

I voted not need. I think if anyone who really wants it still can solder it themselves, then get rid of it :)

Some games are unplayable without the pause button.

The button is used to open the menus.

And just to mention a few:

Alex Kidd in the Miracle World
    Psycho Fox

Hmm, I did not realise some Master System games actually require the pause button, it would be sad if we could not play Alex Kidd in Miracle World since it is quite a popular game.

What about using a low profile button instead? Maybe something like this:-

I dont know if its long enough, but I am sure there must be other similar models.

If its not possible to find this sort of button in the Ukraine maybe somebody could buy them and send them on to KRIKzz?

I suggest "Miniature Tactile switches". They're for PCB mounting already so it makes the addition just a matter of drilling a hole on the case. The size of the button is standard (there's several lengths to choose from)

I wouldn't be able to get unlimited lives in "After Burner" for the SMS without the pause button! (hit pause 99 times during opening game sequence!)

Seriously, the pause button on the SMS did much more than just pause. If it is removed you might as well remove SMS compatibility all together. I say keep it of course.

didn't some games let you use a p2 button as pause?

I always had the pause button freeze my games, didn't know it had a function beyond that.

On SMS both the reset and pause buttons can be used for different things.

The reset button on a *real* SMS unit is actually an software switch like a button on the controller. Pause is actually the NMI pin of the Z80 CPU. I assume the MD running on compatibility mode will be the same thing.

On a real SMS the Z80 is only reset once at boot. Further use of the reset button has to be handled by the game program itself.

It's done that way so each time the user press RESET, the game system does not show the "SEGA MASTER SYSTEM" logo multiple times

I also remember a cheat on wonder boy in monster land where you had to press pause 50 times to get money.
and of course, as said before, some games need the pause button to access to the menu and are unplayable without it.

IIRC, in Streets of Rage the pause button is used to activate your special weapons.

I played Alex Kidd in the Miracle World a whole hell of a lot as a kid and never once touched the pause button on it and was able to play it just fine.

Tempted to pull out the SMS and see what this menu looks like.

What did you think all the items were for..?

  20. #20
I played Alex Kidd today with the pause button. Right in the beginning of the game you get the ring. If you hit pause, you can select the ring that then allows you to "shoot". There are quite a few items like this in the game.
