They are targeting sellers of PSjailbreak and clones and confiscating them.

But you can still buy DIY type programmable boards which are cheaper and better anyway since you can upgrade them later if needed.

Plus, you can edit the payload to add own stuff it does, you're not bound to what the jigmakers give/allow you.

i think that this would make more economical damage than ipothetical piracy...

after all the process of ripping games to disc is so long and boring and requires the real Br too... if i was sony i wouldn't do all this mess. Also how many games can you store on most ps3 models? 3? 4? maybe 10?

Cool, so Sony has no other option than to send you a replacement unit if you send yours in for repair :-)

Correct, ripping a large game is going to take awhile. But people will trade time, which they have lots of, to save money. Even during the DreamCast days people would be on their dial up all day downloading ISOs. So this is a non-issue.

Also, it doesn't require you to have to original BD-ROM to rip it. You can download the game from the internet and use the PS3FTP to transfer it to your hard drive or just put it on an external hard drive.

Finally you can put a bigger HDD into your PS3 if you want to do so. So you aren't stuck with 20gb, 60gb, 80gb, 120gb, etc. You could go out and buy a 500GB or perhaps even a 1TB or 2TB hard drive to put into your PS3. Plus for games that will run from an external drive, for between 80 and 100 bucks you can buy a 1TB external HDD.

So this is a real potential problem. What hurts them most in my opinion is unlike Xbox 360 where atleast I think the main appeal is playing games online, with PS3 many have no incentive to update except to play new games. And like PSP I'm sure many will just wait till hacks or workarounds appear to play newer games.

This could be a serious issue for Sony. No one really knows how big piracy is and the real impact of it. Clearly we know they will lose revenue because of it. I think they had to take some action because this exploit was just too damn easy to let go. When anyone can spend 30$ or less to get their PS3 hacked without any real risk like soldering modchips had, it's a problem. You don't even have to take the machine apart like the 360.

Sony will now just be in a cat and mouse game like they have with the PSP.

Yeah who knows, it looks like the PSJailbreak team may be having a harder time than originally planned anyhow. Still no news on their updates and what they have planned...I've sent out an email asking them what they had in mind exactly but I doubt I'll get any response.

This should be a minor inconvenience as real media is needed for now, further exploits may change this...

I haven't heard anything about that. But I do know that they increased checks and delays because a shipping container was found containing fake designer handbags, watches, etc. Collateral damage means that other items in the same container were checked as well which indirectly caught a whole bunch of other questionable material. I think China is cracking down because it gives them a bad reputation for illicit goods. But this is all news from people I know in China and those who ship out often. You probably wouldn't find anything on the Internet about that.

You'd have to be silly to use anything but air express really.

I must have misunderstood something then! i read around that you can play the ripped game only on the machine that ripped it due to some machine specific encription...

The new official firmware with 3D mode is out next week. Firmware version 3.5.

If I was the author of the original PS3 Jailbreak, I would wait until after the 3D firmware was released to disclose any workaround for the 3.42 hack.
