Frozen Wondermega....

I have a partially working Sega Wondermega. Seems to boot up fine with a cartridge installed, but without it the screen freezes after startup. I've not seen this kind of problem before...

The lights on the side of the tray and front seem to be a bit dim, sometimes increasing in intensity. I'm using an old powerpack from a Victor Wondermega.



Any clues?

Stock ROM, or is it a multi-region replacement? My initial guess is that there's an error it can't handle as it's checking for the presence of a disk. Does it behave the same if the drive lid is up?

Yeah, the screen doesn't seem to change under any circumstances. I've manually pulled the lid up and it finishes the lift on it's own. I've started it with the lid up and it closes itself right after. CDs don't seem to spin.

Before you jump into any diagnosis that requires pulling the hardware apart, I'd check to see if the Wondermega can detect a standard music CD (a retail one, not a CD-R or anything.) Successfully playing a music disk would be an indicator that all the CD drive components are mechanically fine, and that the optical parts work as well. That would narrow down your possible problems pretty handily.

Seems like the CD Drive circuitry is not receiving enough power.

Before showing the animated logo, any MEGA-CD system check for the CD Drive and if that fails it just sits at the main title screen without show the logo.

The dim lights are a good signal of that the internal power supply circuitry is at fault.

I'd say check all the capacitors before anything else. :thumbsup:
