I know of at least one instance of a region free BIOS wired into an X'EYE but I'll bet it was a modified MegaCD BIOS rather than the X'EYE.

My feedback thread, since it seems somewhat difficult for people to find.

Haven't yet dumped the bios, but hoping to do so soon...
Is the JP_Wondermega_02061992_regionfree.BIN for Sega Wondermega only, or will it work on Victor original version? I unexpectedly ended up with a pristine RG-M1, and haven't yet decided its fate (to mod or not to mod)

That's how the current dumps were made. It apparently masks the CPU vectors (first 256 bytes) of the rom. And that area is not covered by the SEGA checksum, so the dump passes the SEGA checksum just fine... :)

It's for the "tray model" Wondermega (motorized lid).

Sure, but Aren't BOTH the Victor (first model) and Sega Wondermegas motorized lids?

I'd imagine they had different rom given who the manufacturer is...

Yes they might have different ROMs but the hardware is identical.

    Hi all!

I'm new to this forum, and allready it makes me happy to see so many positive people with a passion for all retro gaming!!

I allready contacted L_Oliveira about the possibility to completely modify a Sega Wondermega to a PAL accepting system, and he told me about his region-free BIOS wich i may use for this mod, and ofcourse for this i'm very gratefull so thanks L_Oliveira!!!

Right now i am looking for a technician who is able, and would accept my request (on a commission basis) to completely modify a Sega Wondermega 1st. model to a PAL operating/accepting system.

If anyone can help me out with this i will personally guarantee it will be worth your while!!

Thanks in advance for the positive constructive replies!!

There may be an issue with the Hacked EU Mega CD2 bios on real hardware( through the mega everdrive). I was trying to play Sol-Feace when it tries to load the levels for a demo or to start the game it gets kicked back to the mega CD bios screen. all other bioses hacked or not and the original EU mega cd 2 bios work fine.

I'm also using an original disc with my mega CD 2.

I'm Same thing happens on my Multi mega.

Funny thing i also noticed the music bug with the Sega CD 2 in the CD menu bios's on emu's, it works as it should on real hardware.

Also Is there an Easyish way to dump the Multimega mega cd bios?

Can you make a proper report ?

Which version of the Sol Feace game you are using ?

Which version of the EU hacked bios you are using ?

You mean it works on all BIOSES but the one you want to use ?

Any more details will help !

I'm using Sol-feace EU, version, real disc.

The Issue is with the EU mega CD 2 region free Bios ( run from an mega ever drive). on both my multi mega and Mega CD 2 When you try to start game or it try's to load a demo of the actual game it gets kicked back to the bios screen.

It is reproducible on my Mega drive 1 /mega CD 2 and MultiMega hardware.

I've tried a few other bios's and it works including other region free bios's including EU mega CD 1 and JP bios's, also the unmodified and orginal EU mega cd 2 bios's work fine too.

I don't use the JP Bios simply because I've been playing Flashback CD, and that just seems to not boot without an EU/US bios, like many JP games won't boot without a JP bios. ( might be the way i burned the disc) .

I did try to reproduce the issue on an emulator too but the game just wouldn't boot properly, didn't get past the sega sonic logo whichever bios i tried.( no big deal there that's partly why we like real hardware).

I found your region Free Sega MultiMega Bios on another thread, That works perfectly, Ideal for the Mega CD 2 as well.

Some Day I'll have to get around to installing a modded bios in the Mega CD 2 with switchable between Region Free MultiMega and JP mega CD 2bios's.

So I've been seeing this thread for the better part of a year now. (OK, ever since I first signed up...) Been MOSTLY ignoring it thinking I didn't need the region free BIOS. I was looking over at KRIKzz.com to see if my Everdrive MD had the latest OS on it. While there I was looking at the features I saw an interesting one:

    Mega CD BIOS image loading.

It got me to thinking. "So the EDMD can load BIOS file, eh? I know the perfect subjects to test..."

So I found a nice zip elsewhere with 9 BIOS files in it, all region free of course.

    EU Mega CD 1
    EU Mega CD 2
    JP Mega CD 1
    JP Mega CD 2
    JP Wondermega
    US Sega CD 1
    US Sega CD 2
    US Sega CDX
    US X'EYE

So I put the 7 that I could use (I have no X'EYE or Wondermega...) on my SD card in a dedicated folder and went to testing. Everything seems to be working and my EDMD does indeed load the BIOS image properly. Testing the EU and JP ones on my US copy of Sonic CD confirms the bypassing of the region checking.

Nice work man. Now I can load whatever BIOS suits my fancy for whatever reason and pop whatever CD game I want to play in. JP game from EU model 1 BIOS on my model 2 US console? Yes please...

Damn, last time I saw this, it was japanese region free only... I may have to organise some chips burned.... Use one for the recently repaired sega cd and another for the spare sega cd 2.

My current model 1 (put away for my son) & the model 2 I use, use the multi-region bios.

I thought you knew. You are pretty active in the forum and bought quite some ED product. Well better late than never. when I needed to buy a megadrive/genesis flash card I had to spend a lot of time to decide if the extra 70$ of the MegaED were justified by the faster load time and the CD RAM Cart features, because the rest is pretty much the same between EDMD and MegaED as of now (I know MegaED uses RAM and EDMD uses FERAM which can only be reflashed so many times but I think in my lifetime probably I would have been fine). Of course MegaED has more hardware so in the future more features can be implemented and KRIKzz already stated that CPLD in EDMD is fully utilized. MegaED has both CPLD and FPGA and I suspect there's still a lot of the FPGA HW available. I am pretty sure the CPLD is used for interface (5V to 3.3V) conversion as well as bootstrap (CPLD has ROM/flash where a boot loader can reside), while FPGA is used for the rest .... anyway I am just speculating as I am no CPLD or FPGA expert (I wish I was, and if I find the will power I may spend some time learning about it).

Anyway enjoy the newly found feature. I found out on MegaED that it is better to stick to same CD version BIOS (v1 for v1 and v2 for v2) and just use the region free version you like the most because of graphics/easy access to feature or whatever else.

Enjoy your EDMD CD BIOS load feature!!
