    Best Sega sprite scaler?

With all this talk of Afterburner, it got me wondering what was Segas best Sprite Scaling game?

Make your choice and give a nice reason, and if you choose other, say what it is and why?

Mine has to be Outrunners as it really played like a proper Outrun sequal with a fantastic music system. It was also one of the last of the Sega sprite scalers.

Although token nod to Turbo as it was the first proper sprite scaling game even before Namco used the Z8000 in the only arcade game to use the 16 bit Zilog chip in Pole Position...

The whole genre of 3D one-on-one fighting owes (much of) its very existence to Dark Edge, so I voted for "other" since this game wasn't listed! On the other hand, was Virtua Fighter even remotely influenced by Dark Edge or did AM2 create it without knowledge of this spiritual precursor? If not, you could argue that VF was at least the first successful example in this field...

Wasn't G-Log and R-360 just the very same program, just in a little bit different outfit? That's at least what I remembering from playing them back then. :)

I chose Galaxy Force, because it's just so damn fun and pretty.

Was really close to picking Space Harrier, as I love it...but the scaling is just soooo much cooler in Galaxy force

I not listed it mainly as I've not met a single person who played the game outside of MAME... every other game on the list either I played or I know some who loves said game. Although you failed to register your vote so try again! ;)

Strike Fighter is very similar too but R360 was time limited where as G-Loc had lots of stages ala After Burner... Although G-Log is a new game to me...

I went for Galaxy Force II. I was thinking of Power Drift but in the end Galaxy Force II has a special place in my heart. On a side note, why is it called Galaxy Force II? There necver was a part 1 or was there?

Wasn't the original Galaxy Force a prototype, or am I confusing this game with AfterBurner?

There is a Galaxy Force flyer in Japan, which means it did exist although probably as a deluxe version which was changed for general release....

I chose Outrunners for the reasons mentioned above, though I did not like certain aspects of the game such as the cars/characters and voice announcer. They made it a bit too goofy in my opinion.

Edit: Also the courses are a bit too short. They feel like they need to be a little bit longer - a few more turns or something.

At first I thought this was a criticism of each game's scaling functionality and aesthetics, but now I realize you're asking which game overall is the best, eh?

You don't have to own any of them, as most of these are arcade games. You can put in your favourite or one you thought was technically the best.

You should swallow your pride and buy a PS2 and then you can play the really good Sega Ages collections... the GF one is an amazing collection.

That would explain a lot. I never had the privilege of arcades so I've had to catch up a lot this past year.
Also, the scaling shooters I've played haven't impressed me much... though after looking at vids of GFII and such... Damn, I've been missing out.

Basically, I played too much NES Top Gun.

I'm going to vote for Outrun, because out of the handful that I've played I have to choose it. I'll use the results to determine what I should play next.

OK, so then there is nothing else left than voting for Out Run, the undoubted by far best racer/scaler ever produced by sega :)

I do not know about that strike fighter, but the grafics and everything was just the very same in g-log and r-360, beside the g-log coulnd do the raltime loops and pirouettes ;)
Btw. its name of the game was G-Log R-360. The R-360 was just the name for that custom cabinet.

I appreciate Galaxy Force II quite a lot, but today it's more of a big sprite mess than bringing good game play & fun.

What about Jurassic Park? That game had some really impressive 3D-like effects for its time.

So little love for Power Drift D:
Although I do love several sprite scaling games, I wanted to particularly appreciate one of the more unknown and no less amazing games, which translates to POWER DRIFT for me!

It's so intense, so 3D, so full of variety... agh. OutRunners is awesome too, and so are Galaxy Force II and After Burner 2. I'm also a big fan of Space Harrier, played it to the final stage with one credit and spent thousands of yen on it in the Shenmue arcade.
But what to choose? ARGH. Power Drift ist just too cool, also it has a trauma since it got kicked out of Shenmue 2 for some reason, so I'll try to dry the tears with my vote :P
<- can someone please make this as a repro and sell it so me?
