    PS2 problems!

Ok so I bought a ps2 yesterday from some dude, it came in with a lot of stuff and I got it at a good price. It's a SCPH-30004. At first it read one of my discs fine so I assumed it had no problems. But when I tried some other games I run into some serious problems. Whatever game I use it always comes up with the "Disc Read Error". I can hear the drive clicking and spinning for a while and then it just stops and I get the DRE.
Many of the discs I tried are completely clean no scratches at all. And it still does the same thing! I tried opening it and cleaning the laser and actually I got a lot of dirt off the unit, but the result was the same.
I thought about returning it, but the buyer says that the unit was working fine the day before and I have no excuse. He accuses me of having broken the PS2! I don't know what do, I spent most of my day yesterday to fix it and it pissed me off. Any ideas? Thanks in regards.

Its a dying laser, no doubt. No way you broke it in such short time. Clearly malicious deception. Threaten the seller with legal actions.

Hmmm I tried a cdrom PS2 game and it seems to be working fine. What the hell? I can't can't run PS1 cdrom games btw nor DVD-ROM PS2 games.

Going to try right now let me tell you in a bit.

Nope, Disc Read Error. God damn it.
I've heard that when a ps2 refuses to play all the discs from certain types of media the laser might need recalibration.
Is that true? If so how do I do that?

Thanks for your responses btw ;)

But I advise that you first try everything to reverse the transaction with the seller, you are in a bad position to do so if you wreck it entirely :-/

I don't think I have a chance really. He has many positive ratings and I have no proof against him. I'm going to try to calibrate the laser, that's it right?
    Thanks a lot:D

I've pulled a few 400B from SCPH-3000x before, for my TEST. Hopefully they're the same model. :P

It just needed adjustment. There is this cog on the upper side that needed to be moved. It seems to be working fine now. Thanks!

Yeah, Sony has bad optical drives in their consoles. Maybe the worst in the industry.

    Re : PS2 problems!

I have solution regarding to your disc cleaning that is basically use a cart or disc cleaner first. These can be purchased from virtually any game store, or heck, even Target. Follow the instructions enclosed to clean your system and games. Some general rules that I follow: for every 50 hours of game play, use a system cleaner, and for every 20-30 times you play a game, use a game cleaner. If the problem becomes too great, or if disc / cart cleaners and system cleaners have lost their effectiveness, you may have a hardware failure
