How do I flash PSP with custom firmware?

Yea... I just bought one of those $100 PSP's at GameStop today, and wondered how I could flash it. I only found how you could flash 5.00 firmwares, NOT 5.01 firmware. Do you follow the same procedure with the 5.01? Can I do it without buying a pandora battery because it is the "phat" version?

You can Flash Custom Firmware if your Psp has very older versions of Firmware such as 1.50/2.00.

Others you need to make a pandora's Battery Which i've heard isn't terribly hard to do.

I wouldn't really know because I've had my PSP Homebrew enabled since early 1.00/1.50 Days

Correct about the pandora battery not being to hard to make , all you do is take a regular psp battery and remove one of the pins, iirc.

Yeah but if someone is asking for a mod-tutorial handout on this forum of all places, they probably would have some trouble with that.

Yeah it's easy to google though so they shouldn't have a problem. It's not like back 5 years ago and only like 2/3 sites had information about running homebrew hah.

You don't even need a Pandora if the FW is still 5.03 or bellow.

And yah, pretty much every site even closely dealing with the PSP has a zillion guides on how to do it....

You need to be really careful when messing with the battery. I made a Pandora when I was in Korea with a heated kitchen knife (It was all I had and I was desperate to play Crisis core) and I nearly took my arm off.

I can't remember the details but if you bridge the pin you are trying to disconnect with another it goes bang.

Also take care when opening the battery case, there is a thin ribbon cable between the board and the battery which can easily break.

Best of luck to you, once you've skipped through a few articles you'll have no trouble at all. Everything after the Pandora bit is a piece of cake and many of the CFW's have so many failsafes and recovery options it's hard to brick a PSP these days.

    O RLY?

Shows how far you get out of the loop once your system is already modded.

I can only highly advise against hardmodding a battery!
Find someone close to you with an alrealy modded/CFW'ed PSP and patch the battery by SW means, there are tons of tools for that and also setting up the required memstick setup you also need.

    Hehee, yah.
On 5.03 you can use a "homebrew enabler" and (given the PSP in question is flashable - newer ones brick when trying it) you can then run a tool to install a permanent CFW.

It's all pretty straight forward and, like said, there's an uncountable ammount of guides and tuts for it.

You can get pandora battery & magic mem stick packs off Amazon marketplace - mine cost me £7 iirc.

    hah that's so true.

I was heavily involved in 1.50 days and when downgrading from 2.00+ First came around and remained active creating Icon Sets for Applications and PS1 games.

After around the time CFW 3.40 came out I just stopped caring haha..

Now I glance once in a while and things have changed a bit.

Not much stuff in the way of apps come out anymore , most developers just complain about how much the community sucks and act like children by making things, followed by bragging about it , then not releasing it.
