360 messing around. 'Play DVD' rather than 'Play Game'

Sigh. My week old Elite is saying 'Play DVD' when a disc is inserted, rather than 'Play Game'. Ejecting and reinserting sorts it. Ive emailed Microsoft and AMazon to try and cover myself to make sure I can get a replacement if I need it.

If I DO need a replacement, could I put my existing HDD in the new Xbox and just carry on where I left off? Would it refuse it and say 'from another Xbox', or would it be just like my current Xbox in terms of my gamertag and letting me use my saves etc?

You'll be pleased to hear that you can remove the HDD and use it on any other 360 and your profile(s) and game save data will also be fine.

Thats a relief, at least if it is a problem I can just put it in a new one. Thanks.

Sorry for stating the obvious, but have you tried using a DVD Player cleaning disc?

Exchange with Amazon as faulty. Don't even bother with Microsoft. You are within the 30-day period.

you think it is that much of an issue to require an exchange straight away? I have until 11th Feb to make a return. Its played a couple of games straight off after I tried that cleaning disc, so I have some time to see if it happens again..

It's brand new and needs its laser cleaned already? Forget a cleaning disk, send it back as that ain't right. That's unless of course you have spent a week feeding dirt, dust, cat hairs and toast through the tray slot of your 360.

My current 360 is 9 months old and has never once needed cleaned or refused a disk and that's despite my 5 year old son being the normal user of the unit. Finger prints on the discs, cat hairs, general house dust and all sorts get fed into that machine without a glitch thus far.

My Elite sometimes says a game is not inserted in to the drive however a quick eject and close again always does the trick.

I don't really know whether to get an exchange or not. I cant really be bothered to if it works but I dont want it to crap out in a few months. Ive emailed amazon about the viability of keeping my hard drive so if they think thats okay, maybe I will..

Damn...to state the obvious, the 360 hardware really does suck. :banghead: Wonder why they've never designed a slim version or anything.

Amazon say that I'd need to send back the entire package, hard drive included. I've just replied clarifying that obviously I'd send back the new hard drive alongside my current unit..

I get the same thing with my 360 (bough before xmas) although it only does it occasionally and all it usually needs is the disc ejected then put back in.

Not sure if its the drive or the fact that the games i play are used/pre-owned and as such contain small marks and other stuff on the discs which make them give me the play dvd message instead of play game.

I guess if its really a problem then send it back.

It first did it on a second hand game with marks on it. I just assumed that was why. But it also did it with a brand new game. I'll see how it goes I guess, its working fine apart from those two instances and its been okay since!

If it's only a week old and the discs aren't scratched, I'd probably get it replaced. There's something iffy about it which is likely going to end up becoming more serious in the future.

However, if you're happy with it like it is then just keep it.

I guess I'll see if Amazon will do a swap and let me swap the hard drives over. I'm not sure if I get the new console and then send the new one back, or vice versa.. If I get the new one first then thats easily enough resolved!

Jesus. Amazon just went ahead and despatched me a new one without me even saying I wanted one. Theyve told me to transfer my content to the new console before I sent it back.. the hard drives will be the same so I'll just swap them.

Just so you know, games sometimes saying Play DVD instead of the game is pretty much normal behavior. I think all of my 360s have probably done that atleast once. It's not a sign of a bad unit really. Generally ejecting and closing the tray will get it to be happy. If not power off and on generally will.

Yeah. I thought maybe it was a 'general' kind of thing. I ddi want to wait and see how it goes, but hey, I guess fate has spoken. I just want to attach my hard drive to the new one and get on with it lol.
