    The PS3 - Opinions

    Hi people.

For some reason, I'm itching to get a PS3. I'd to know some more and have some neutral opinions, so I thought this is the best place to ask; I don't know anyone who owns a PS3.

I have a Wii (mainly for Gamecube usage I hasten to add) and my dad has a 360. Ive really missed a lot of this current generation. I like the 360's arcade and indie services, they are cool..

My questions, really.. How does the controllers recharge function fare? Is the cord too short, does it last a long time? Does it have services that are comparable to the 360s arcade and indie services? What do you think are the best retail, arcade, and indie games for the machine.. and how much do they cost? Can you download demos and updates like the 360, and do these and the trophies work pretty seamlessly like the 360s?

Any helpful opinions or observations appreciated =)

The cable is about 3(?) feet long. Fortunately, it's just a USB-A to Mini-USB cable.

Yep. The PlayStation Network Store. Not so sure about indie games, but has arcade games (most are also available on XBL Marketplace), and some PS1 games. Cost depends on the game (same situation as on the 360), but uses a real dollar amount instead of the dumb point value like the 360. Demos are available in the PSN Store (under a demo category), and updates apply the same way.

and do these and the trophies work pretty seamlessly like the 360s?
For the most part. They unlock the same wasy achievements do (ps3trophies.com has a comprehensive list of trophies available). The part that sucks is the need to synchronize with the PlayStation servers (especially if you upgrade your hard drive or you aren't credited with the trophies online). When you check your trophies or compare your trophies to someone on your friends list is when it will sync.

Just look at the exclusive-games. You got Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Jak & Daxter, God of War, etc. If you like that: get a PS3.

Do you like Blu Rays but you don't have a Blu Ray player? Get a PS3.

You like playing online but you don't want to pay for it? Get a PS3.

For the rest it's similar to the Xbox 360. Streaming, PSN, multi-platform-games: all similar.

If it were me, I'd say go with a slim. It is not worth the extra money.

Yeah, personally I'd go with the slim, unless you're really looking forward to using ps2 games in the unit and lets not mention those nifty card readers.

Main reasons to go for the slim:
    1. Lower power consumption
    2. Still covered by warranty (unless you have the extended warranty)
    3. It's NEW (you won't have to hunt for that perfect, yet used, system)
    4. Larger stock hard drive

Main reasons not to go for the slim:
    1. The sleek chrome trim is now just a distant memory

And then pray the blu-ray drive doesn't die or that it doesn't overheat/ YLOD.

60GB / 20GB units, and also some 80GB models have a considerably high defective rate.

    As far as exclusives go:

    Must haves:
Valkyria Chronicles: Fresh take on the strategy rpg.
Demon's Souls: Hard as nails but keeps you coming back.

    Also good:
Uncharted 1/2: Great but not worth keeping IMO.
Killzone 2: Ok Single Player, Great Multiplayer.

    You may like:
Infamous: Good, but if you played alot of Crackdown you will be dissapointed.
    MGS4: Im not a fan.

    To Avoid:
Lair: Pretty and great soundtrack, but just isnt fun.
Heavenly Sword: See above, also very short.

I've been thinking about getting a PS3 too, but other than a couple of games, the exclusives don't really interest me at all plus almost every game is multiplatform these days anyway, so it almost seems like a waste of money to have a separate console for a few games and to watch Blu-Rays...

If you do get a PS3, get Flower.

    Especially if you're into drugs/alcohol.

The PS3 is most comparable to the 360 in terms of games and features. I will add though that no-one has mentioned Little Big Planet as an exclusive. If you are looking for JRPGs 2010 seems to be a really big year for the PS3.

I will give you some important facts about the PS3 that you didn't ask.
    • PS3 Software is region free meaning you can purchase a Japanese or US game and it will play on any PS3.
    • You can play PSN games from all regions but you will need to setup a PSN account for each region to do so (PSN accounts are free to setup).
    • The PS3 has a hard drive standard and some disc games will install data to the hard drive to speed up loading.
    • You can upgrade and use any 2.5 SATA hard drive so if you are not limited to what Sony produces for hard drive sizes or speeds.
    • All models (except for the launch 20gb) have Wi-Fi built in.
    • PS2 Software is still region protected so if you do buy a PS3 that allows you to play PS2 games make sure it's the region that you want. Europe only had a model that had limited compatibility with PS2 games by the way.
    • Blu-ray is also region controlled but there is only 3 regions to work with and in many cases you can find movies that allow playback in all 3 regions.
    • One advantage that any of the Phat models have over the slims is the ability to install Linux (You can use it like a low powered desktop PC or play SNES games and such).

    Trials HD > LBP

Little Big Planet isn't a platformer for the usual Mario addict like myself, and I own LBP.

If that's a reason to buy a PS3, then Trials HD, a humble arcade game, is a reason for everyone to get a 360. I downloaded the demo and I wish I had the money to buy the game :(
