Thread: Ripping audio from Saturn discs?

    Ripping audio from Saturn discs?

I was wondering if this is possible when the audio is not stored in a .cda file. I looked through a few Saturn titles I have and, when I open the folders on the disc itself, I saw a few labeled "BGM01" (which i assume has some of the BGM from the game) BUT the extension is labeled as "Security Catalog". Is there any way to technically break it open to extract the files themselves? Also, when I read the disc contents through ImgBurn, it reads that track 3 is the audio track...is there any way to try and rip it from one track of the cd? If anyone has any info. it'd be really appreciated...

Mika: Where are you taking me, Gillian?
Gillian: To look at videos on YouTube...
Mika: *sigh* No more videos of a drunk Harry dancing with a dead Snatcher...
    Giliian: Nope, it's better...It's LiquidPolicenaut's YouTube Videos!
Gillian: And after that, you should also visit

I just rip them like normal cds. AFAIK, the music data is stored as regular cd tracks.

I did nothing special - just stuck it into a cdrom drive and used my favorite cd ripping software.

CDDA tracks should be piss easy to rip. For the sound files, see http://snesmusic.org/hoot/kingshriek/ssf/

i used to use cinepak from meggames to listen to shinobi

Wait, the audio is Cinepak too? There might be something in a saturn sdk if there is one floating around somewhere. I have it personally, but I dunno if I should share, it might "devalue" something someone else is hoping to sell.

Saturn audio is normally one of the following

Red Book CDDA (normal CD audio)
PCM (normally at 44kbps but they are encoded in a way that a normal PC PCM audio reader can't decompress)
Software generated like "real console audio" via the kickass Yamaha audio chip
ADX (only found on later games. Same format used for Dreamcast and modern consoles such as the 360 & PS3.)

As far as I know there are no Cinipac audio files but I could be wrong.

By the way, what game are you trying to read the audio from? Let me know and I'll take a look. Theres 99% chance that I own the original game as long as there was a JPN release of it.

Panzera Dragoon Zwei and Soukyugurentai have amazing chip generated music as does NiGHTS which changes on the fly!! Astel is another  In fact there are quite a few but I can't remember them all from memory. There must be a site out there that lists them all. Time for a Google search I think.

Humm... Dragon Force soundbank use a crapy 8bit 11k encoding. Music is pretty good but it would be better if it had been much encoded.

Panzer RPG or Radiant use sequenced music too. Night is probably the game that use the best of saturn sound hardware.

Nights didnt do anything special, it just had a buttload of audio tracks, all with small differences.

The Saturn sound chip was severly underused, no real game did anything special on it.

I think Nights mix cdda and chip music.

It does. Stage music is FM/Wavetable combined synthesis and boss fights and other minor bits (menus and such) use CDDA.

Nights is my favorite game on the platform regarding sound/music.

It used 4 variations of the same song on each stage. the player would swap from a track to another depending on how the player performed on each section of the "map" for the track lap. Very interesting idea in my humble opinion.

It's just an early attempt at dynamic music.... If you want to go back further, check the original Columns.
I could never get the music change in Nights, no matter what I did. Is it related to how bad you perform in the game, or how do you treat those little floating coneheads? The music never changed, even if I was actively trying to murder every single one of those pests.

The original version of Columns (the one on cartridge, the one for SEGA CD had it removed D:) does indeed change the music when you hit a certain height with jewels ... I like it so I put piles of jewels on the corners of the screen. ;)

Sorry to bring up an old post but 2 and a half years later I STILL can't crack this! I was trying to rip the bgm from Snatcher and, for some odd reason, it is stored in a ".cat" file (as seen in the pic below). Does anyone know how to open this type of file?

They are just catalogs of data.

Most of the music/sound is in the bunch of aif files in the disc. The rest are in synth format: the bgm_*.cat files seem to have both samples and music sequences, the dsb is in dsp.exb and the sound driver is in sddrvs6.tsk. jset.bin looks like the memory map but all the tracks probably have their own data maps, I'd either extract them from the game with yabause or write my own. You can make ssf files from these with the tools on kingshrieks page.

I checked all of the .aif files and they are 98% voice clips and sound effects with just a few bgm tracks. How would I go about trying to rip the audio with Yabause? I ran the emulator and used the real physical disc with it. I tried, under the debug menu, to save a file as a wav but it saves it as a 0kb file. Any insight on how to do it would be greatly appreciated!
