    Unlocking iPhone 3G (legit reason)

Does anyone know a way of unlocking the iPhone 3G which is running the latest 3.1.2 firmware?

I bought my iPhone outright with no contract but O2 (the carrier) won't provide me with an unlocking code until I've owned it for 12 months, this seems a little ridiculous to me.

I'm going travelling next week and wanted to get it unlocked so I could buy different sims abroad to save money whilst still using it for all of my media needs.

I've dabbled in Jailbreaking before but I stay well away from it now seeing as I make my living from iPhone development. I understand that it can unlock the carrier lock but many of the new blog sites surrounding the latest methods are confusing and don't say if the latest baseband can be changed or not. I've tried asking questions but the comments are just followed by the usual pricks shouting n00b.

If anyone can point me in the right direction i'd be most grateful.

If you want to use it in the USA, I'm pretty sure you need a contract for data services, which is currently $30 then the call plan ($30 or more).

You can just stick any sim card into an unlocked iphone if you have no data services then you just cant use them and are left with wifi. It just acts as a normal phone. So any prepay sim is fine.

Even if it doesn't now, it's most likely jst a matter of time. That is shitty taht you bought it outright but can't unlock it. You should've just bought an HK model off the interwebs.

Yep it worked, tried it on Vodafone and it was fine. Only issue is that it seems to delay text messages by a few hours and then eventually catches up. I was getting balance updates at 5 in the morning from texts i'd sent hours ago.

Thanks for all the help peeps. Close thread methinks.

Umm thats strange it might of just been a glitch with o2 at the time as i cant see any reason for that to happen. Either way at least its unlocked.

Hopefully it didn't say something like, "get back here and fuck me again". That'd be a bad one to get 5 hours later.

For the record, I had my iPhone on O2 last week in London and texts worked fine. It's an unlocked iPhone but I was using my Softbank card.

Don't forget to reset your default ssh root password after unlocking your iphone as people might abuse it, and basically anybody could log in to your iphone and check/alter/delete your personal information after doing a port scans on known mobile providers ip ranges.
default password should be 'alpine' if you didn't change it yet, ssh to your iphone and type passwd.

If you're on the road in the US you'd want a SIM with data coverage though. It's a big country.

Most people can get by with no data coverage so long as the phone itself works. ;)

Perhaps, but that would require you to know people to call in the US. Twimfy was apparently going to go cross country as a tourist. I'm thinking Google Maps etc. would be stuff he'd want to be able to access.

Heading to Thailand and Australia now. Data access shouldn't really be too much of a problem.
