Thread: "Wii Startup Disc"

    "Wii Startup Disc"

Anyone ever actually seen one of these discs? They were apparently shipped with pre-launch retail kiosk systems:

My theory is that they hadn't finished the final system menu software when they manufactured those units, so they shipped them with a stub that only had enough code to display that "Please Insert the Wii Startup Disc" screen, and install any updates off a disc you inserted, but I'd love to get some confirmation of that and see what was actually on the disc.

It looks like a few of these actually leaked out to customers, e.g. here. There used to be something on Nintendo's tech support site that said something to the effect of "If you ever see this message call us IMMEDIATELY", but I can't find it anymore. :(

Interesting bit of info. I m not clear as to what it does though, surely Nintendo are never known to ship a console incomplete (The dev 64DD being an exception of course, you had load the IPL from outside)

That would be even more interesting :)

Are you sure about this? I'm pretty sure I've read reports that retail kiosks came with these discs -- and I don't mean people merely pointing at pictures of the box, I mean people who said that they worked at a retail store and they had one of these discs.

Damn, looks like I missed the other half of this puzzle on eBay a couple of weeks ago -- a Wii demanding that someone insert this disc, http://global.ebay.com/AS-IS_BROKEN_...620758358/item

If anyone comes across one of those, I'd be equally interested -- the only way it can display that is if there's some stub system menu in place of the real one. (Meaning, a working Wii can never fall into that state ... or else my understanding is severely flawed!)

bushing, i think you mean this :

"Insert Start Up Disc" messageIf you get an "Insert start up disc" message after powering on your Wii console for the first time, there is an issue with the operating system of the console and it will need to be repaired or replaced. Please call 1-800-255-3700 to discuss available options.

Yes, that. I want to see the error or the disc, in person. "An issue" is code for "We shipped you a pre-release device."
