Sega Model 2 emulation

I've recently been getting in to the wonders of Daytona arcade at home thanks to finally getting on the decent video card wagon. The problem is that while my PC is now powerful enough to play such games as model 2 they still have issues now and then. Sega Touring Cars for example is silky smooth during the intro and time trials but runs like a dog at 10 to 20fps when the real race starts.

I'm currently using nebula. Is this the best available or are there others out there? Nebula is great but does have a lot of graphic issues.

It's not your vidoe card its your processor.

You need a dual core processor to run at full speed. My friend has an amd athlon dual core that is 2.6ghz and it runs silky smooth on his while on mine I suffer the same issues you have.

Get yourself a dual core processor and your set. Though depending on your mother board you may need to get a new one to support the processor.

Games such as Daytona, Sega Rally and Dead or Alive do run silky smooth in full screen mode though while others such as Touring Cars run silky smooth during the intro and time trial but like crap during the main race. To me that says emulation bug or like you say it may be a CPU problem. Mines only 2.8Ghz.

Nebula does make the model 2 emulator, latest version is v0.9 whic runs everything full spped wiht minor graphic glitches if any.

When you download the emu it comes with two versions one for regular processor and one for optimized for dual core.

The dual core one will give you perfect speed on everything. From what you say you have I'm guessing your processor is a single core.

I say if you have a friend who has a dual core processor, try it on there pc/laptop and you will see the difference.

Sorry to interrupt.. but what about model 3? how far along is emulation on model 3? I really need to get myself a Sega Rally 2 fix for crying out loud :(

Model 3 was far along but the developers gave it up. Earlier build of it exists of it in a earlyer version of mame but you need a pc with a lot of processing power to get decent frame rate.

Bugger, looks like my CPU is not good enough :( Still, at least Daytona and a few other classics work fine.

Well theoretically the unoptimised games can run full speed on single core CPUs but it's unlikely at this stage that they will be optimised. It's like Dreamcast emulators. Early alphas run fine on 7th generation x86 CPUs but the more features added to them the less optimal they've become thus prompting authors to switch to the current line of processors.
I reckon it takes less processing power to map the genetic code of ALL mammals than to properly emulate the PS2! (well not quite but it's getting there)

Wouldn't it be nice if ElSemi wrote a special driver for Virtual On to enable us to control it properly :(

Are you sure it's not just the Saturn version being emulated at full speed? ;)

Nope. I own that and the PC version which is the Saturn game running at a better frame rate. The Model 2 game looks much better than both the home versions. Like I said, the opening demos are so smooth. The emulator says it's running between 60 to 72fps on those sections.

There are 2 versions of the m2 emulator there's one for single speed CPUs and one for dual cores. Depending on the type of Model 2 board the games run perfect to alittle iffy.

Have you tried lowering the resolution? On my computer, I need to lower the resolution to 640x480, and then it runs at about 60fps.

As in, the attract mode stuffs? So, actual rendered (etc) graphics as opposed to title screen simple stuff?

In that case, I'd assume he could set the fullscreen res to 640x480 (or whatever), right? Never used that emu.

Shouldn't the emulator force this? It's the lowest "common" resolution above the maximum Model2 resolution. Anything above it is overkill.

Yes, the opening to Touring Cars is actual game being played. The same as what you see when playing the game. Think of it as a replay mode. Anyway, this works so well as do the time trials. Must be an emulator issue. Reading through the docs it mentions that some games don't work how they should. Touring Cars is probably one of them.

Tonight I'm going to check if I have the single core CPU emulator or the twin core. Maybe I'm running the wrong one? Ver0.9 is the latest build of Nebula, right.?

correct v9 is latest build. As for if your processor is a dual core, you gotta look at the chip itself and see what it says. Cause some pc a while back used a virtual like dual core which isn't the same.
