PGM - Is it a worthy Neo copycat?

    Hey Everyone,

What's the general feeling about the PGM? Is it worth the cash or are the games not compelling/numerous enough to make it worth while?

The system doesn't have the hugest amount of software. But there are some really enjoyable games for the system... and lots of Mahjong.

Demon Front is a very worthy 'run n' gun' and certainly up there with some of the Metal Slug series. The Knights of Valour games are incredble scrolling beat 'em ups. Well worth getting KoV: Super Heroes and KoV2: Nine Dragons. The Gladiator is another good side scroller.

I never owned a Martial Masters cart but it is a pretty good 2D fighter apparently.

Trouble is that Bee Storm is the only Cave shooter on cart. The rest were released as stand-alone PCBs with a cutom BIOS.

If those few games interest you, then go for it; it's a great system.

I'm surprised with how cheap PGM cats are here. I''m going to get some if just for the Mahjong titles. :)

I'm not even sure where to get games from. I guess direct from Taiwan? Once in a while I see a consolized PGM show up on ebay with a game or so, but thats pretty much it.

Bee Storm is fun, but not to be compared with a REAL Cave shooter quality-wise.
<- can someone please make this as a repro and sell it so me?

I want to play Demon Front...

My buddy just got a Oriental Legends 2 kit the other day - I'm heading down there Saturday to give it a go.

    That sums it up nicely.

I was playing it at IC09 -- not realising that it wasn't made by Cave -- all the while thinking: "what... the... hell...? How did Cave make this?!" Not that it's a bad game, per se, it's just not worthy of the DoDonPachi title.

Demon Front on the other hand... I couldn't get in to that at all. Compared to the Metal Slugs, it is terrible (disclaimer: that is my opinion). The graphics are boring and there is no fun in it; I just found it irritating. Maybe it gets better if you get further in to it...

I gave up on PGM, had a board w/ one of the KOV games. I get sick of killing the same 3 different enemy sprites. Waited a few months for a Demon Front to pop up, never did, so I sold it all off. Not really worth the system, IMO. Neo is far better as is the ST-V system if you are looking for some fun cart-based arcade setups.

    What is 'PGM' exactly?
"No one shall defeat the Infamous SAGAT! Ah hahahahahaha!"

Anthaemia.: Anyway, that's enough crazy ranting and wild speculation for now...

PGM is the Poly Game Master... made by IGS (International Game System) a Taiwanese arcade maker. They dropped the PGM a few years ago. The hardware was better then the MVS using a 20Mhz 68000 and a much better sound chip made by turtle beach.

DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou and EspGaluda are the only two true Cave games made on the hardware, except they are single boards rather then cartridges...

I had DF for about 2 years and finished it a few times and I had the same feeling. The games is nice for the first time or 5 min then it gets quite boring. I sold it and bought all MS kits for NeoGeo.

The PGM2 board came out not too long ago (2007), I've never seen it in action, probably never wll unless I buy one. There's one game for it, from what I can tell. Here's a link to it -

I'm really curious about the specs of the board, I keep hoping it'll pop up on system16.com , which is one of my fave arcade pages. PGM is listed here, shows all the games and the PGM specs -

Oriental Legend 2 and the new Knights of Valor game are available on PGM2 cart. King of Fighters '98 Hero is on an all-in-one blue PGM2 board.
