The new generation of cheapass DVD players are worth shit though. If you want a really decent player, no matter of what format, you should get a highend device at the climax of the format's lifetime. Like ~2005 in DVD or mid-90's in LaserDisc.

100$ for a BR player sounds fantastic though. If there just wasn't that fucked up region coding I'd already have one (even for 200$).

Let's not forget that HD-DVD players hit the $100 price point during the later stages of the HD-DVD/Blu Ray wars.
No way in hell should anyone pay over $200 for a BR player at this point in time.

Sure, but then the realization of paying an average of $25+ per movie sets in, and suddenly this doesn't seem like such a good value.

The cheaper the player, the more people buy them, the cheaper blu-ray movies become.

Yeah, true but the cheaper the player the worse the picture encoding is. Anyone really serious about HD would be better off buying a more expensive player. Still, for kids and such I guess they're a good deal.

The likelihood is, if you're paying less than $100 you don't really care too much about the quality.

Yakumo, this is true. If it expands the market and drops the price then who cares?

Apparently it is not a Profile 2.0 player, so no BD Live support. It does support 1.1 though. Reports on the picture quality are good. It upscales DVDs too.

weird to see That DVD was once £100s and now are £10 a pop. guess the same will happen with bluray soon enough. and i cant wait.

Well, I hope that happens soon because paying ~30 Euros for a movie is a major ripoff. I was kinda hoping that HD-DVD would win since it didn't have region codes (what's Sony's obsession with region coding? PS3 games don't have area codes so why the fuck do Blu-Ray movies gotta have them?), but I guess after the failure of Betamax, MiniDisc, Memory Stick and UMD Sony's due for at least one format that doesn't immediately crash & burn :lol:

it's not as if everyone has an HDTV. It is more important if they drop the price of quality TV sets if they want to sell any HD format for less. DVD didn't require you to change your existing equipment - most people hooked it up via composite anyway.

HD is not as big a deal as we make it to be. We are a thin slice of the world's consumer base and they're still not convinced that the higher resolution is worth the expense - I know I m not. I own a PS3 and not a single BD movie. I m happily watching Divx on it though.

Maybe once Blu-Ray drives for the PC come down as well as the BD-R discs, that is only when I would look into it. Even though I own a PS3, I have yet to really buy any Blu-Ray movies or see any need for them.
