weird error while playing super punchout!! for SNES

I was trying to play Super Punchout!! for my SNES on my model 2 of it, and it kept saying "please switch off" and "this cartridge will not work on devices that make unauthorized copies" "please refer to your instruction manual for more information"

Any thing happen like to this to anyone else? or seen strange errors similar?

my Punch-Out ROM will never have a dirty contact on the security chip.

It's happened to me before...with one of the Donkey Kong Country games, I think. ASSEMbler's theory is right on the money. For whatever reason it thinks that you're playing a rom off a backup device.

If that were true the system would reset. The lockout chip is not related to his problem.

To stop this error you need to clean your cartridge's contacts. What is happening is you are tripping SRAM copy protection by your cartridge making poor contact. When the game is played on an older backup/copier device this message will prevent you from playing the game because copiers always mapped in their whole SRAM chip. Newer smarter copiers will check the imbedded ROM info and only map in the amount of SRAM the game expects, thus not tripping the SRAM copy protection. Cleaning your system's cart port and the cart itself should resolve the issue.

Super Punch Out, Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, and many other games have SRAM copy protection. With Killer Instinct forinstance if it detects ANY SRAM at all it knows to trigger the copy protection screen as the real cartridge has none. For the games that have SRAM you can test to see just how much SRAM there is. Too much or too little and you can figure out that the software is not running on a legit cartridge. Ofcourse dirty contacts can cause all sorts of issues.

    awesome information!

I think it's just the cart, not the system itself that is dirty. My SNES has never given me problems before, and I just got the cart home from a used gamestore.

My Killer Instinct cart used to give me a similar error. After some cleaning it started working normally again. My DKC2 did that to me also. Cant ever say my Super Punchout cart ever did that though. Definatly try giving it a cleaning Henners, it should work after that.

Good to hear, nobody should be deprived of Super Punchout.:icon_bigg I would still give the contacts a cleaning anyways, cant really hurt anything and its better for your cart slot anyways ( I always clean a used SNES game when I get it home after buying it.).

Capcom's Alladin on the SNES will crash after you jump a barrel on the 1st stage if the game detect any SRAM. ;)

Another Nintendo game I'm sure has such protection is Super Mario All Stars. With the said error message and everything else.
