    Naomi 50 twin seated cab

Just when you think you've seen it all you discover Sega produced yet another strange looking cabinet. I have never seen these out on hire, although I've seen plenty of rear projection units you stand up to play, such as shooters. This is a 50 inch RPTV (rear projection TV) with a VGA input, 2 seats and controls.

I have heard that the projector is most likely tri-sync which basically means this whole unit would be great for MAME! I don't know how much space is actually available for the likes of a PC motherboard as the manual tends to suggests it's a tight squeeze.

Irrespective, the next refurbishing job is on a rather huge unit.

No images as yet from the seller and images on the net seem to be thin on the ground. So here's a stock image.

Plus, I have found a tech manual.

I think I've seen one of those in the wild - playing either Virtua Tennis or Virtua Tennis 2.

Yep, it would likely have been Virtua Tennis - that's the title currently in the unit I am obtaining, but not for long. Good game, but not what I have in mind.

I'm sure i've played on one of those, seen one or something simmilar but when you 50 inch RPTV i don't think it could be a thing i've played on. It was a good while ago so i have a hard time remembering.

Can't wait to see some pics though.

Not sure. For the price it was worth the risk. I've had no word about the large screen, which is my biggest concern. I think it's a big ol' brute of a unit, and it's either going to be an excellent piece of kit (possibly sold on as it truly is massive) or it's going to be the weirdest supergun known to man lol.

Remove the screen / large cab and have a supergun built into the seating lol

I found an image of Virtua NBA. Clearly the unit in the vendors image show a standard Naomi marquee for VT2, so likely it started it's life as something else.

Looks to me like that VT2 maybe could have come from a naomi deluxe 38" as seen here:

Also on the off chance that you ever need a manual you can find one here: http://hard--candy.com/index.asp?page=Naomi+50+Inch

This the first time I've actually seen decent pictures of one. Cheers.

It's very orange isn't it. If I could get my hand on one of these I'd do a custom New Net City job with a wall-mounted 52" Samsung LCD.

I was thinking about the costs involved in fitting an LCD to the unit. Certainly worth considering - perhaps...

Probably very! I have seen some awful screens. Well, given the price I paid I cannot complain. Suffice to say I probably wouldn't have been able to pick up the Virtua Tennis 2 cartridge for what I paid on this unit! Seriously!

surely all the projecter needs is a new bulb? Although I appreciate these can be half or more the cost of a complete projecter in some cases

It'll be three bulbs in the bottom of it I think. One for each color - I can't find a tech manual for the screen part of the unit. It's obviously something they hoped nobody would be tinkering with. I'll see after 2nd July.

If the bulbs are needing replaced, it might be worth looking for an TV panel.

My experience of RPTV is limited to an old Panasonic I was given for nothing and eventually gave to some guy in Perthshire. Not before I had taken it to pieces and attempted to get it to give a sharper image. Never did manage it.

If space IS a concern and it has aspirations to become a fulltime MAME unit, remember that there are plenty of smaller PC form-factors that should be plenty powerful for some arcade emu. It's possible that even an Intel Atom platform would run just fine.

I'll post images and take some measurements. The manual is a poor photocopy and I can't really tell from it how much space there actually is.

I've seen these threads where people have turned a SNES or NES case into a PC or whatever so it must be do-able in the space within this unit.

Right, you can trample over from Austria and fix this one if it's knackered lol

Yes, the price was stupid, but only because the previous eBay winner had messed around he let me have it for whatever price I suggested. From what I can gather it was sadly yet another arcade going down the pan. The owner had to hand the keys back pronto. So, the deal was take it off his hands, but promise to have it out of the arcade within 2 days, which trust me was tight!

With shipping added, it was still a bargain.

I've mucked with CRT projectors many a time before. In fact, my current main TV is an old Zenith CRT Front projector. 3 tube model. Amazing picture when it is properly converged and focused.

Your best hope is that the display's convergence has totally gone out of whack...and nobody knew how to fix it/thought the display was just dying. Could be a turn of a few (OK, a ton, probably) of adjustments and you're on your way to a perfect display.

Dead tubes? Well, they might be able to be had...but...$.

I'm really curious to see what your display looks like.

We'll all know after the 2nd July lol

Thanks for the information. If the whole screen section is dead then I've probably paid what the rest of the cabinet is worth.

Imagine just turning the whole seated area into a giant supergun lol
