June 8, 2009 - Rare's original Perfect Dark is one of console gamers' favorite first-person shooters, and the title is scheduled to make its way to the Xbox Live Arcade this winter in downloadable form. But according to the XBLA version's information page on Xbox.com, there are some big changes in store.

As we reported during last week's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Perfect Dark XBLA will run in high-definition 1080p (a measure of vertical resolution – it means it will look pretty). The original game ran in standard definition, so the visual boost should be quite significant. The XBLA version will also add cooperative play to the campaign, but we're not quite sure how that will be implemented just yet.

And finally, the game's framerate will be bumped to 60 frames per second, a much-needed upgrade that Microsoft promises will make Perfect Dark run "silkier…than ever before." We like the sound of that. Although Rare created the original game for the Nintendo 64, the company isn't credited as the developer on Microsoft's Perfect Dark XBLA web page. That distinction belongs to 4J Studios, a Dundee, Scotland, developer that ported Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to the PS3.

That made me almost fall from my chair...

Dang I'd better fix my 360 before this release.

Anyone else excited about this? If they added online play to the port it'd be fucking awesome. :oh:

Yeah I hope they make a good port, anyway I dunno why they said among the changes, they'll add cooperative play to the campaign. That was already available back in the N64 version. Both coop and counter-coop (the suicide pill was damn cool :icon_bigg).

If I buy a LIVE account, and then buy Perfect Dark from XBLA, once my account expires, will I still be able to play it?

lol, people confuse two things.

buying games on xbox live means games are yours, you can play them whenever you want despite of your xbox live membership status, if your subscription expires that means you won't be able to play online, that's all.
so in order to purchase any xbla game, you don't need gold membership, silver memberships are free.

Also, GOLD memberships get a one-week exclusivity on XBLA content, whether games or DLC, after which SILVER memberships are then allowed to (pay, if needed and) download.
... Actually, I'm not sure if this applies to everything there, or just certain items. Maybe someone can clarify?

I hope they actually improve the graphics, since the original, like many N64 games, looks pretty terrible today. The wording "we will increase the resolution" sounds like they're just going to bump up the resolution and frame rate, kinda like when Sega said they would be releasing their old games in HD, which just turned out to be the original games stretched out to an HD resolution :rolleyes:

I believe it's getting the Banjo Kazooie treatment. They released a few screen shots and it looks pretty nice.
