    H1N1 Swine Flu

So, i'm sure everybody has heared on the news/tv/radio about the possible pandemic of H1N1 Swine Flu.

My problem is i have a trip to the USA (westcoast/seattle region) comming up in 11 days which i really need to take.

Now on the one hand we have experts saying that it's not wise to travel and on the other hand we have experts saying it doesn't matter if you travel or not because the flue will make it's way regardless of prevention.

What would you guys do in my situation

No problem in the U.S., no problem in most of Mexico. It's supposed to be Mexico City that's most affected. There's some cases down here, and in many cities in the U.S. but it's, so far, nothing to be afraid of.

I did get sent back from both my jobs, and the beginning of next quatrimester is delayed until further notice (I teach for a living). All academic activities are suspended, nationally, until may 6th.

I say: don't worry. Here in France they say that the virus can now be cured so I'm sure the "antidote" will be spread soon!

France is perhaps being a little previous. They have yet to establish why the virus has proved fatal in Mexico and not elsewhere. There are a variety of theories including that there may be other factors, a differing strain or some mutation having occurred.

With the World Health Organisation having moved to Threat Level 4, it's clearly not over yet and many questions are needing answered.

It has emerged that doctors in Mexico have been told not to define deaths relating to the H1N1 strain as the cause of death! This has led to speculation that the death toll in Mexico is higher than previously thought. A Dr. who was interviewed yesterday confirmed that this was the case.

I live only a few miles from the UK sufferers, but I really don't see any reason at present to be concerned. If it looks increasingly like it is not contained or spreading like wild fire then it would be of worry. If deaths begin to occur then I would be far more concerned.

I wouldn't worry about it. So far all cases are in the eastern half of the country. Even so, the total now is at 40 cases, in a nation of 350 million. Your chances of catching it are practially zero.

You know, I never get flu shots, and I never get the flu. Some people catch it every year like clockwork, guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Until they start calling it Captain Trips I wouldn't worry. After that I'd stay out of Vegas...
Well, it's rather brutal here. Right now we are advising all our clients to put everything they've got into canned food and shotguns.

I would go ahead with the trip. So far there have been only 40 confirmed cases with about another 100 unconfirmed yet, and 75 of them if I recall are from a new york group that went to Mexico and came back with flu like symptoms. Many of the others were people who went to Mexico too.

I'm really confused, I just heard about this today. Is it really a big problem or is the media blowing it up?

  16. #16
Honestly. The media is feeding on this. It's an easy story that would attract tons. It'll be fine. They made a big deal out of west nile and etc. There's quite a bit of people in the US with it, not nearly a chunk of the population, too small of a percentage, and it's done nothing yet, except ONE severe case of it. It'll be fine. People die from normal flu's. The only big deal is in poor or developing countries, where medication is hard to obtain.

It seems it is a big problem, at least in Mexico it is, my dad lives there but is currently in Brazil for some business and is very worried, as they are canceling lots of flights in and from Mexico. He already bought a pair of face/mouth masks for when he gets back, and was warned to be very careful when eating outside and to avoid very crowded public places. He doesn't live in the federal district so he might not be in much danger.
