Thread: Games I just finished/completed

  1. #401
Finished Super Mario Sunshine yesterday and... whatever. I'd rather beat SM64 again, a lot more entertaining.

    Just my 2 cents. ;\

I just started Super Mario 64 today. In about an hour I got 32 stars and beat the first Bowser.

From what I understand the 120 Star record was just set recently at about 1 hour and 48 minutes. I have some work to do.

I'm thinking about starting Super Mario Sunshine next. I've never played the game so I'm a tad bit excited to see what all the mediocrity is about. :)

May I tell you my experiences? :D

To tell you a bit of what bothered me: Mario's moveset, some really frustrating levels, lack of linearity, enemies.

Mario's moveset is REALLY short compared to Mario 64's. You don't have the punch, you don't have the kick, you don't have the long jump. All you can do is to jump and shoot water.

Frustrating levels. There are some "special levels" throughout the game which can drive you MAD if you aren't used to the game's camera and if you aren't good with 3D jumpers. But they are really fun once completed. :P

Linearity. In the past Marios, I always knew where to go. In the 8-16bits Marios you have Worlds, in SM64 you reach floors. In Sunshine, the levels are unlocked almost "randomly".

Enemies. Except for the bosses and the Boos, they are all dumb.

It is a fun game, though not the greatest 3D Mario.

    Interesting.

Not be able to long jump SUCKS. I long jump everywhere in Mario64.

Mario64 has like the perfect blend of linearity and exploration. One of my favorite things about the game.

I really liked Sunshine. Except when I was nearing a 100% and my save got deleted.

I didn't like Sunshine because it lacked some of the classic 3D platformer parts. Many stages were just plain running, defeating enemies and cleaning landscape. I just want to jump from platform to platform dammit -__-. The worst thing about it are some extremely frustrating stages. I've had enough when I was supposed to climb up a gone-wild ferris wheel with enemies on it who electrocute Mario by touch. The Yoshi-stars were very frustrating as well.

Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 is a much better choice. If you want a great platformer on the Gamecube, go for Wario World. Very underrated, but so enjoyable. I've had 2x more fun with Wario than with his naiive counterpart. :P
<- can someone please make this as a repro and sell it so me?

Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY and also redid Fable III on challenging - mostly played good, except I kept the girl alive this time, married her and got her to sire several children before openening a brothel for an orgy :P It looked better this time around now I got my GPU sorted - 1600 x 900 with everything very high/high and no framerate probs FTW!

Trying to use my 360 pad for Half-Life 2 Episode One - even wiped my game save to play with it from scratch but it just feels weird - it was fine for the aforementioned titles though, perhaps due to better integration?

I agree that Super Mario Sunshine can be pretty frustrating in parts. It does have beautiful graphics, though. Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are probably better games overall, but also much easier. Of course, there are all sorts of extra challenges and such in those games, if you're into stuff like that.

I play the first Mario Galaxy and just coasted through it. It looked great and was pretty fun but not challenging at all. I didn't have much motivation to collect all the stars.

Played through Luigi's Mansion the other day. Short, but I almost prefer that. I had a good time.
