Semi-OT - Dreamcast vs. Gamecube Ikaruga

After having the Dreamcast version of Ikaruga for close to a year now, I found a used copy of the Gamecube version today whilst shopping, and picked it up, eager for a bit of english translation of things. I must say I was sorely disappointed in the game in general. I played through the first 2 1/2 levels on GC, and then fired up my Dreamcast copy to check things. For one thing, the text I really wanted translated (the little blurbs at the start of each Chapter) were not only not translated in the English version of the game, but they were completely cut out! Not only that, but the Gamecube version took up less screen space than the Dreamcast (Dreamcast takes up 2/3 - 3/4 of the horizontal screen space, while the GC seemed to take up only 1/2), the visuals were much more blurred, and the explosions seemed very lackluster (and super choppy at those end bosses). Is it just me being far too picky, or did anyone else notice this?

    Interesting note!

I always love the comparison of the same game on two different systems! Screenshots would be awesome :)

It's cool to know the DC does a better job on this game... but I'm sure it's just because it had a crappy porting over to the GC :)

It's very difficult to have a ported game to be better than the original.

We have to be glad if it's on the same quality. But in most cases the ports aren't better. Mostly because the different systems and code optimization. :axe:

But yes i would like to see screens comparing both versions. :smt023

I don't think screen shots would tell us much difference. Take Shikigami No Shiro 2 on Game Cube and Dreamcast. The Dreamcast version is perfect to the arcade in every way but the Game Cube version has an option to take away the slowdown which the DC doesn't. So in this case the Game Cube version is "Better" than the DC if you'd like that extra bit of speed. Personally I like the slowdown as it makes the action feel more intense.

The gamecube version of ikaruga is my favorite because it has a 2 player co-op mode and the USA version runs like a dream at 60hz (the pal GC version has slowdown ddue to no 60hz support)
