Bad parenting, or "All about shitty parents topic"

Meh. Last month, I was in the library at my college campus using the computers, there was this black dude sitting next to me looking at freaking Usher or something with his 2-3 year old son. The kid keeps asking about his mother and starts complaining, father tells him to shut up "Yo' mama's with yo' outha mama", and then the kid starts whining. He calmly whispers to the kid, "Shut the f**k up, I said shut the f**k up", and then "Want me to pop you in the f**king mouth?", kid get ferocious, slams the keyboard, and then SMAAASH!! Father pops the kids mouth and screams at the kid who, at this point, starts crying very faintly, then outright brawls like a lion. The dad then proceeds to grab him by the arms and heads toward the exit (and as they exited the building by the door, starts dragging him by the hair. :-( ) with everyone around watching the scene. I didn't see no cops around, now that I think about.

Any unfortunate sightings or stories about sad-excuse mommies and daddies beating their kids, or just bad parenting you wish to share?

Well, at work one day there was a father screaming and yelling at his two kids because they were asking me where the video games where....he was like "DONT BOTHER HIM HE's WORKING IM GONNA WHIP YOUR ASSES IF YOU DONT STOP" and I'm like "Sir, I don't mind-" and he tells me "Hey I used to work at Grocery stores, too"

Anyway, that same guy could be heard all over the store later that night. Then I heard this loud thudding noise and then one of his boys starts crying loudly because he accidentally knocked like a plastic cup or something off the shelf. I remember him saying, or rather, screaming "IF THAT WAS GLASS I'D HAVE TO PAY FOR IT DAMMIT" followed by sobbing from the kid.

It wasn't as bad as your story, but these kids are gonna grow up bitter and afraid of their own father...

Oh, and I'm gonna add something, those two kids seemed really well behaved to me already, their father was just excessively mean to them. He might have been in a bad mood, I dont know.

That the only way kids learn, getting their ass kicked, don't leave marks though, thats not cool.

I personally feel good when a parent gets real with his pos kid when he's being a lil bitch.

They are well behaved for a reason, because their dad is a real dad, not brain washed by society, but yeah that black guy in the library is a dick.

My friend's brother is 13 I think and he's absolutely out of control and always has been. His parents are parents of the year but they seem to do fine. Sometime's kids are seriously out of control, but I do hate to see parents act like they don't want kids. I can understand little kids getting on your last nerve but still. The library example is just horrible, feel bad for the kid.

Well according to recent statistics released in the UK after the tragic death of 'Baby P' (can't be name because of his age when he was killed) at least 230 children died at the hands of their parents / guardians or carers last year.

Some people simply don't deserve to have children in their lives.

After spending sometime in korea and then coming back to the UK it's clear that some sort of punishment needs to be in force for disrespectful children, I'm not sure that hitting is the answer but in korea they beat the hell out of their kids in school and at home and the result is a very respectful peaceful society. It would be interesting to see some statistics about child deaths as a result of domestic violence etc in Korea but on the whole the approach they take seems to work.

It's a stark contrast to this country where in the last 3 weeks I have seen countless acts of violence on the streets and various news reports of stabbings and muggings...all by young offenders (and I live in the safest county apparently.)

When I worked in an Internet cafe, I had a man come in with his young son (not that I think it makes any difference to the story, but this was a black man, too, and he looked the sort who might well frequent the gym). He asked if he could hook up his laptop to our wireless. I explained that we don't have wireless and we ask that customers use our PCs as they're all set up the way we wanted them to be used. He got a bit shirty. I explained that they're set up so people can't download, because we don't want anything illegal going on, and also because we have gamers in who don't want their ping adversely affected by heavy downloading.

My colleage stepped in and said he could use his laptop as long as he sticks to those guidelines. Ten minutes later, I see him using Limewire. I go up to him and ask him to please stop downloading. He couldn't understand why he should. I explained that he's illegally downloading music and we cannot allow that. He got funny with me, so I asked him to leave. He started shouting and swearing at me, and threatening to hit me. I asked him if this was any way to be acting in front of his son.

What lesson was he teaching his son? If you don't get your own way, even if you're in the wrong, use bad language and violence?

Have to respectfully disagree here. I was raised with no beatings of any kind, not even a slap. Instead when I misbehaved my folks would take me aside and explain why what I'd done wasn't acceptable. Their logic was that violence towards children breeds violent adults, and from my experience in life, living in the UK, that's true. If anything, parents smacking their children about only encourages the idea that violence is acceptable, which in turn encourages violence later in life. All the violent, disrespectful kids I knew growing up were from violent and broken homes.

I really don't think the "bad parenting" issue simply boils down to the amount of force used to control the children, anyway. Bad parents are bad parents regardless of whether they beat the shit out of their kids or not. Korean society being more law-abiding and respectful than British society is a result of innumerable reasons, and I think that saying that it's just down to whether or not kids get a slap when they misbehave is simplifying the situation way too much.

Smacking your kid is fine but beating them is a whole different thing. With my little boy (1 year 8 months old) I tell him "NO" first and then a few more time. If he looks at me because he's understood but continues to do the bad thing he gets a slap on the hand. This works well. The other day he was drawing on my TV screen, at that time "you little shit" was running through my head but no, I told him to stop it. He continued of course so I told him again. Still he continued so I slapped his hand to which he looked at me with a look on his face knowing he had done something wrong then said "no" to me showing that he knew he had understood and stopped drawing on my TV screen. It took F*ing ages to get the pen off as well.

i treat my cat the same way Yakumo. there's no point in punishing someone who doesn't understand really, you just need to indicate the correct direction in most cases.

I was spanked when I was young, but later on my parents would take things away, to me that was far worse.

I think it's perfectly fine to spank kids. They HAVE to learn respect and discipline or they'll grow up to be idiots with no sense of respect for others.

Now, there is a difference between discipline and abuse. The only parts of a child that should be "hit" are the hands and the bottom. And definitely not enough to leave bruises or anything serious like that. Just enough to show that you mean business and they won't disrespect you nor anyone else. Worked for me.

Also, you bet your ass my kids will be raised the same way. I'll be a "cool" dad in every sense, until they do something stupid and I'll lay the law down on them.

And in all reality? My mom was the person to discipline me the most, my father didn't do shit but threaten and I really don't respect him that much because of it.

Your kid is bilingual already? :icon_bigg

I completely agree. There's nothing wrong with smacking a child appropriately. Beating or other such violence is wrong, but issued in that manner after several verbal warnings (along with appropriate gestures) is fine. That's how I was raised, and I didn't turn out so bad lol.
