DS news in Japan - New Nintendo console analysts' choice

Read this article in Today's Japan times. See the picture below then found it on their online news paper. It's looking like Nintendo are the choice of the Japanese.

Damn, things aren't looking good for the PSP, and I can't say I'm happy about that. Even I'm covinced, as a SEGA fan first and foremost, to go for the DS.

What's PSP going to have form SEGA? Yte another port of Puyo Puyo Fever. And when the DS has the first true UGA game to see release since SP5 Pt. 2, with 'I Would Die For You' - there's no question about which hadnheld I will be getting at launch.

They say there is no compelling reason for gamers to buy the PSP.
Thats from the article by the way(how the hell do you get a name in the quote part?)
    I disagree with that.
This is the Sony namebrand. For a lot of people that is all the justification they need for forking out $300.
People didn't line up days before the launch of the PS2 in Japan because of the game lineup. It was because it was playstation.
Features Smeatures. People will buy it because it's a Sony.

Not necessarily in the handheld market. Lots of people will buy Nintendo because they've got a GBA.

If I wanted a quote box to say it was from you, I'd write:

I'm not doubting the DS. Pokemon and Final Fantasy guarentee it's success.
I just think there's a lot of premature doom and gloom surrounding the PSP at the momment.
Thanks for the tip on the quote thingy as well :smt033

Alternatively, you could just use the "quote" button in the post you wish to quote, like I did just now :-D

All that matters is that psp will sell in USA.

    That's all.

Compared to Japan it's a huge market that worships
    sony.

I think it'll be nice to have a two handheld market again.

Indeed. Having one console completely dominate the handheld market has gone on too long.

The last we ever had a market with two mainstream, well-represented handheld consoles in the market was with the GB and GG, and even then, it was hugely in GB's favour, the market was.

After the GG died, it was Gameboy. Just...Gameboy. The NGPC was there for a few minutes...

I really hope Sony gets it right with the PSP formt he start and proves these 'analysts' wrong. It will be nice to have two consoles competing on an even level in the handheld amrket for once.

I don't know.. Having moving / possibly easy to dirty or fail optical parts is a bad idea. Even MO type drives...

Carts are still the best way.

But given PSP will be for movies, etc, it'll probably
use that mini blu-ray disc they announced for camcorders
    a few weeks ago.

Yes, but UMDs will be like MDs in that they are encased, yes? So the optic media itself doesn't have much chance of damage.

The optic parts you mention though, like the laser...that is worrying. But there had to be a point where handhelds progressed beyond the limitations of carts and towards optic media. Hopefully Sony can get it right.

I think the said thing is, is that Sony generally makes shoddy at best hardware. Anyone else here had serious problems with a Sony product?

Got a few PSX'es with knackered lasers... I think it's about time they made 'em as sturdy as the NEC CD-ROM2 again, with a metal assembly.

1 MD player since 1998 and it's used almost every day since it's now used as a digital music player for my PC. It's a Sharp front loader recording Minidisc player.

Sharp products are very good indeed unlike Sony's cheap built stuff. People may think I'm bashing but Sony do build poor quality products compared to Sharp, Panasonic (mostly), Hitachi and so on. I class Sony product quality as the same as Victor Japan (JVC).

Having played the PSP I can say without reservation that it's got a lot of problems to resolve before it's worth a purchase. Never mind that every single unit at TGS was badly scratched 'cause there's no way to protect that soft plastic, the screen itself isn't very bright (to conserve batteries no doubt) and the D-pad is complete garbage. Imagine the newer super-stiff pads on a dual shock, only with a base of shiny plastic that grips your thumb rather than letting it slide like a textured surface does. The 3D pad tends to prefer compass points, so diagonals are slightly more difficult to hit.

Then remember that Sony's encouraging ports for the platform, so we don't get much new original software. And as a movie player you're expected to re-purchase the movies you've already bought on DVD - and Sony's said they will not be selling UMD writers so you can't burn your own.

What's that leave you with? An expensive easily damaged machine with a dim screen, short battery life and media you've already watched or played.

Unless Sony pulls a drastically rearranged system out of their hat before launch there's little reason to suggest this system will win over the DS.

Just one. ^__^ A little Sony MZ-N505 unit I got back in 2001. It's had quite a bit of abuse, being randomly tossed into various backpacks, thrown under car seats, dropped, etc. If only some of the CD players I've owned (Sony AND otherwise) were this sturdy... Pity the PC-side software sucks so much.
