How does Koei Get away with making the same game over and over again?

I think we've all wondered this.

not to knock Koei because they DO make games outside of their main series.

But how much has dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warrior's changed?
Is there much of a line between Sequel and upgrade?

So I have to wonder? How do they get away with it?

Madden is justifiable as they do make some changes year to year.

But the Warriors Games from Dynasty Warriors 2 on are the same freakin game?

Not to knock them because they are fun but how much more can they milk out of Japanese and Chinese history?

Why is Madden more justifiable than Koei's history stuff? In fact, there aren't more changes made in any boring sports game update than in Koei's Dynasty Warriors.
That opinion is just the old lame "another japanese dating sim"-statement - neither dating sims are all alike, nor are Koei's strategy/war games. They differ in details, for example unlockable characters, locations (shitloads of historically important fights) and some gameplay details. Dynasty Warriors is also just one part of Koeis lineup, they are doing much more in Japan. It's just that we normally don't see the majority of it, maybe because we love buying the same boring sports game again and again too much :)

If you want to check out the exact changes between the Dynasty Warriors games, there's a quite good Wikipedia entry. :)

Yeah and all Japanese people look alike, what's up with that?

But on a serious note, I'm more irritated about all those sports games that gets a revision every year (for full price!). To be honest, I could just buy NHL 2005 if they would release a downloadable player update and be quite happy.

I dunno, I just bought NHL 09 the other day and its pretty damn good, they did add quite a bit since last year.

How much can you do with a sport game ya know?

But there's alot you can do to change up a Hack and slash and make it new.

If you like the base formula, then you'll love the variations and additions in the successive games. It's kinda like Pokemon, which people STILL love.

BTW, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 10 is probably my all-time favorite game. Yeah, I dunno why either.

I could say the same thing about Nippon Ichi, GoH.

Crazed fans who will buy their games anyway, I guess.

It's not that I don't like the games either I just see very little evolution in the series.

Warriors Orochi is fun as hell but did it really need a sequel?

It's not that these game suck either they're just TOO Consistant. I don't get how its fans aren't bored with the same formula.

Isn't it more concerning when they make enough changes to make the latest Dynasty Warrior (6) an awful game compared to the others and then release a superior PS2/PSP version :D

Also they made Bladestorm but I'm the only person that bought and played that. It's essentially a big change to their usual formula.

It's very barely like Powerstone (only the arena based movement is similar) it's more like The Unholy War but a personal favourite of mine. Destrega doesn't get the respect it deserves though and it's crying out for a sequel (Senko No Ronde is probably the closest thing out now).

Actually, I could play SMB3, the exact game, but with new levels over and over again. It wouldn't get boring. That's why I love those HK pirate carts.

Thats exactly what nintedo did with super mario advance 4 & the ereader, there were 30+ brand new levels you could imput into the game using the ereader & cards, all of them were totally new using the game engine of smb3 but using sprites & items from both smb3 & smw. It's like playing another new mario game alltogether, especially when you activate the vegetable switch & you get to throw veggies like in smb2 as well :)

I enjoyed Warriors Orochi on the PC but the visuals were weak. And the DW game for the DS was rubbish. I suppose they could try something new. Proper physics and ragdolls anyone? :P

Warrior Orochi even recycled music. But there's a team dynamic that wasn't in the other games that REALLY helps out.

What's the difference between the Dragon Warrior games? Same base Formula in each game. What's the difference between the Virtua Fighter games? Same base formula. What's the difference between the Call of Duty games? Same base formula. What's the difference between the R-Type games? Same base formula.

Sequels are ment to be similar, otherwise no one would want a sequel. As long as people enjoy the formula, sequels will be produced.

Truth. It's only when people don't like the central gameplay mechanism that they start complaining about sequels. I'm probably part guilty myself, although I don't see what people get out of certain game types full stop. I can understand the desire for more of the same, though. I would love some more of the same of Umihara Kawase. Same level art, same engine, hell even the same platform/s. Sometimes more of the same is good.

Virtua Fighter 3- Added dodge and tired stages TOTALLY different game
Virtua Fighter 4- Took away the dodge button, added walled Stages
Virtua Fighter 5- Added a few new counter styles and refined the fight system.

    Dragon Quest sucks.

    Dynasty Warriors?

    NOTHING changes at all.
