US DVD/BluRay Community

I'm looking for a US / Canadian film community with a well-frequented marketplace. I'd like to expand my Criterion Collection collection which is quite a hard job over here due to some rarer releases. Ebay is sometimes a friend, but most of the time there are only new discs for the retail price.

I appreciate any hints, a nice small forum with a cozy atmosphere would be perfect. :nod:

ps: Is anyone else out there collecting Criterion stuff? I love their releases though I have not many so far (price is high-but quality as well, so I'm willing to pay it. Which I am not very often when it comes to DVDs... :) ), I really don't know any better label than this one. Anchor Bay comes close, but they are publishing a lot of trash too.

Really I have no need for bluray. My dvd look just fine on my dvd player...
If I had a 100 inch tv then I guess it would matter.

I owned laser discs, then dvds...
I don't buy into any format that isn't on my pc now.

I have some Criterion Kurosawas and they are AMAZING.

I have a few criterion released dvds like Robocop, Chasing Amy, and a couple others. Yes I like them I'd buy a Criterion over a collector's edition dvd any day. But the prices are always high

Well they don't make them much, always hard to get. It's sort of intentional.

My only Criterions are Picnic at Hanging Rock, Robocop and Murmur of the Heart. While those are all amazing releases, there are actually even better versions out there (like a great 2-DVD booklet boxset of Picnic (UK) or the Robocop BluRay). Others are just awesome and unique, like Carnival of Souls or Man bites Dog (of which I own the criterion-identical Tartan UK release).

I don't own a BluRay player yet and I'm also still very pleased with the picture quality of DVDs. But who knows what comes next, I think DVD is finally gonna vanish in the next 8-10 years.

It cracks me up but the only director they make a ton of copies of his movies and prices them regular is wes anderson. Of course Rushmoore is the exception to this which still goes for $30.

The forums look nice, but as I don't have anything but an HD-DVD player (the xbox one) without any movies, a DVD/HD forum would be better. For example, I use to be active at German asianfilmweb.de which has a marketplace with all kinds of things, ~80% DVD, 19% BR+HDDVD and 1% VCD/LD ect :)

Buying Criterion Collection releases at retail price is often the cheapest you'll see them. ;)

Criterion discs tend to go up in value after they sell out, not down.

The reason so is because Criterion transfers are top notch and the extras are always well researched and interesting.

I used to collect Criterion Laser Disc releases as you were almost always guaranteed top-notch transfer and quality. Their 'Se7en' release was amazing and I wished I still had it - stupidly sold it all a while ago (about 80 films, 2 x Pioneer LD machines and Yamaha Digi box) for a fraction of it's worth!

Didn't realise Criterion released DVD titles far or less Blu Ray?

It's funny you mention Se7en, as that, Ghostbusters and Pulp Fiction are perhaps three of my favorite Criterion LaserDisc offerings.

To answer your question, yes Criterion has been releasing titles on DVD. I don't recall off-hand if it has shipped any Blu-ray or HD-DVD releases.

They announced this year that they are going to do blu ray releases soon. I wish they would of done the ghostbusters dvd, as I heard the criterion laserdisc contained deleted scenes not found on the dvd released by Columbia.

The deluxe Criterion release of Ghostbusters contains:

1) The movie (duh) with an excellent transfer
2) 2 deleted scenes (Stairway, Janine and Egon)
3) 2 special effects comparison scenes (Library Ghost, Ballroom)
4) The original storyboards
5) The original screenplay
6) The teaser and trailer
7) "Making of" excerpts
8) Special Effects photos
9) Stay Puft photos
10) Improv shots
11) Insider notes

It is an impressive release and, IMHO, is an absolute must-have for any hardcore Ghostbusters fan.
