I've always been annoyed by the chunkiness of the XBOX, so I set about reducing its height.
I started work on it a few months ago, but put it away in a cupboard because there were so many difficulties, mainly re-arranging the insides and getting decent airflow through it.
I've hauled it back out and sorted most of the problems that bugged me and hopefully it will be plain-sailing from now on.

Ah. NO DVDROM drive? I was wondering where that went, since that's the most bulkiest.
What would be cool though is if you can get a hold of a slim laptop DVDROM drive, and 2.5inch HDD, and install them. Of course you'll have to figure out how to connect the DVDROM...

Connecting would be the easy part, hacking the slim dvd-rom firmware so the xbox recognize it would be hard however...
But that would be a great project. Also a slim 7200.3rpm seagate 320go hard drive would perfect for that kind of project.

I think someone has hacked a slim DVD drive already, but that would mean i'd need to cut a slot in the front of the xbox and I dont wanna do that!
I'm planning to fit a scsi socket (50pin) to the back and wire it up to the ide cable (40pins) and dvd power socket (8pins).
Then, make a cable to connect the dvd to the scsi socket.
That way, it can stay in a cupboard until I want to load a game into the hdd.
A 320gb laptop hdd seems a good idea.
I'm sure I read somewhere that there is no increase in performance by fitting a 7200rpm hdd, as the data transfer speed of the xbox isn't fast enough.
Maybe someone on here who knows the technical details of the xbox might be able to say whether it's true or not?
Also a 7200rpm kicks out more heat than a 5200rpm, and i'm struggling to keep the temperature down at the moment.
And that's with 3 fans!

xbox do not come with a 7200 hdd? Didn't know that, anyway laptop 7200rpm harddrive are designed to not use any air cooling, so I'm sure those hdd make less heat than original xbox hdd.
But yeais if xbox ide bus is slow that might not be useful. A standard slim hdd would do the trick them.
The Xbox uses a standard UDMA33-cable, so you won´t get any higher speeds without a proper cable to your drives.
As for laptop dvd drives, there are converter plates which snap on and provide you with a standard IDE interface. Same goes for laptop 2,5" hdds.
You can use any DVD-rom with an xbox, though they won´t play original games, but they´re still great for movie playback.
The IDE controller on the xbox can handle UDMA66 (100% sure) and UDMA-100(not 100% sure) transfer speeds. Simply switching from the 40-wire IDE cable to an 80-wire highspeed IDE cable made for UDMA-100 and UDMA-133 specfications, you do notice a slight decrease in loading time. Only 'confirmation' on this is my friend when he started to mod his xbox.
Slim HDD (2.5inch) outputs very low heat because it only uses the 5volt line.
Wasn't there a specific standard type DVDROM drive from LG or samsung that plays original xbox games just fine?
My boss at my old job has an LG DVDROM that (although it's modded) plays regular XBOX games just fine.
