Sega Saturn Demo - Sega Flash

    Hi all,

The Official Sega Saturn Magazine over here in the UK used to give out a demo disc called 'Sega Flash'. I seem to recall that the later demo discs (the ones with Sonic R on etc) had some really cool music playing during the game selection menu.

Does anyone have one of these discs they could record the music from for me? I'd love to hear it again.

    Thanks!

I happen to own all seven volumes of the Sega Flash demo collection, but sadly the music you refer to is not redbook audio. However, the game select menu and real time intro themes shouldn't be too hard to record from either an actual Saturn (probably best done through a capture card) or via emulation - now if only someone would do this... any offers? I'd sure love to have decent copies of the four main pieces of music, especially those from later discs in the series!

Isn't all the audio on the UKSSM disks in AIF format? Even if it's not, it's relatively simple to extract the audio tracks from the Cinepak files too. Getting it to loop right might be more trouble than it's worth though.

I've got the PAL Saturn Flash 7. Is that song you want on that disc? If not I've got all 30 odd Japanese Saturn Flash discs. maybe they used the same song on them?

It was quite a soft ambient song then a bassline started to come in. It was on the Sega Flash demo with Sonic R on for sure, and I think it was used on the last few issues. I remember the game/video select menu with a preview pane on the right and the music playing.

And yes, I would imagine it would be on number 7, that was quite a late one, wasn't it?

The PAL discs use the same interface as the JPN ones. It's just a system that can be altered with some pics, movies and BINs. The realtime palm tree/tv thing (used from 5 and up or so?) still looks incredible.

If you let the intro roll you'll get a very colourful screen with a tv (which has footage of the games on the disc on it), a palm tree and a 3D rotating Saturn logo.

SEGA games really had great music back in the 90s, but then again bands in those days were awesome compared to the pre-fabricated shit we get to hear all day long today.

is the audio perhaps in adx or afs format? those are easily extracted and played back.

The first two Sega Flash discs had a rather basic design with quite bland music, though later installments were brilliantly put together with especially memorable soundtracks. Sonic R made an appearance in video form as part of the last two volumes, and it's surprising how many people don't know about the "palm tree" intro because they didn't stick around on the title screen for long enough - or, alternatively, do nothing in the game select menu for two minutes. Did you know that by pressing X or Z (sorry, it's been a while and I can't remember which!) on a controller in port two that you can also skip having to wait? I've tried on many occasions to rip the music from both variations of the Sega Flash design, but none of the music appears to be in a format I'm familiar with (including ADX, AFS and AIF). Of course, there must be someone out there who knows what to do... it's long overdue that we don't have to load up one of these discs every time we want to hear these tunes! On a quick final note (pun not intended), I'd love to know from owners of the Japanese variants if any layout elements were transferred to/from the PAL collection of samplers, as I know from personal experience that Bootleg Sampler 2 (AKA Sega Screams 1 - and presumably the much rarer proper second in that series, as well?) borrows its entire interface from the Flash series as it appeared over here. If you want to know more about the contents of these and other similar preview discs for the Saturn, there's a near-comprehensive list over at Satakore that features a few I'm still yet to get my hands on...

OT: Your posts are always full of interesting in-depth information but it really would help if you could throw in some paragraph breaks. :)
