Is it possible to use the NES gamepads on the external controller port of the Famicom? A friend of mine told me that it should be possible with an adaptor or some soldering;-) Unfortunately I haven't found any information on the internet. Does anyone ever tried such a mod?
Quite simple just a case of connecting the right pins to the right pins, common means shared by both joypads.
Famicom 15 pin port (numbering as shown on the connector)
1 - Ground (common)
7 - Player 2 Data
9 - Player 2 Clock
12 - Strobe (Common)
13 - Player 1 Data
14 - Player 1 Clock
15 - +5V (Common)
NES pad
(Looking at the joystick port on the machine top to bottom, left to right (4 pins then 3 pins)
1 - Ground
2 - Clock
3 - Strobe
4 - Data
5 - +5V
6 - nc
7 - nc
So theoretically it would be possible to build a dongle for the Famicom port that has 2 female NES controller ports for 2 players?

Are such dongles commercially available? I'm looking for an adaptor NES -> Famicom.
Never seen one, mainly as the Famicom plus units have NES connectors and AV out so it's easier to get one of those.
I own a PC Doctor Jr, which has 2 Famicom controller ports. Unfortunately I don't have any gamepads for it. I haven't found a useful controller when I was in Japan. I've seen only big and expensive Joysticks. So I thought, why don't use the classic NES pads.Originally Posted by Jamtex

The clones with 9 pin D plugs do use the same protocols as the Famicom does but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of data concerning the wiring but with a multimetre and maybe a logic metre you could probably work out which pin goes where or failing that plug in a clone Famicom joypad into it, if you have a lot try checking to see if the pins are connected up the same...
The PC Doctor JR has exactly two of these plugs.
