Thread: modifying a 360 intercooler

    modifying a 360 intercooler

I just recently got a new repacement 360 because my last one was dying. I have a intercooler but have heard reports of them being bad for the system as they drain the power the use from the power brick before it gets to the console.

I was thinking. Has anyone ever unscrewed the protection plate on the intercooler and disconnected the fans? I was then thinking of just running a wire out to a external AC adapter. This would remove basically all risk of hurting the console correct?

The only thing being actually done to the console is the power being routed through the plugs on the intercooler but there wont be a power drain anymore since its external?

This is just a thought. I made sure my new console is a falcon so I hope its going to run well and cool but I want all the protection I can get. Im also thinking of getting a laptop cooling pad to put under it.

Please let me know your thoughts?

Thats a cool idea. I dunno though, do the intercooler fans even help at all, or just mess the air flow up? I wouldn't think a Falcon needs one, they don't get hot, at least mine doesn't, just warm.

Every 360 out can still break down but the intercooler can cause more problems than what its intended for.Just make sure your 360 is in a nice open area so it has room to breathe.
You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe.

Yeah, I'd never use one as frankly it doesn't assist at all. Just look after your 360 and don't let it overheat.

I agree that the intercooler does sod all - adding extra fans would do nothing if you've chucked it in an enclosed space with no ventilation.

I do wish, however, that Microsoft would just chuck in something small into the kernel which pops up a warning if your console is overheating (like they do with PCs) just so users actually know rather than having their consoles just conk out one day.

keep the 360 near an icebox or something:p

Thanks for the tips lol. I ran it hard last night for about 4 hours playing diffrent games back to back and it never gave me a problem. My 360 is on the bottem of my entertainment center about 3 inchs off the floor on a wood shelf. Its got pleanty of room around it and the power brick is next to it on the same shelf so it stays just as cool (i hope >_<)

EDIT: The above paragraph has been fixed as I was retarded and was spelling at a 2nd grade level...

Well, it's not really the same of course, but if the 360 reaches a really high temperature, it does shut off and throw up a light error on the ring. I thinkt he temp has to be really high though.

Fans pulling in the same direction but at different speeds can do more harm than good if the outermost fans are spinning slower and not pulling out all the air that the inner fans are spitting out (as may be the case of using the Intercooler).

From what I understand the intercooler fans blowing against the exhaust fans of the 360 weakens them and makes the system basically die faster. Plus microsoft wont do anything for your if your 360 died and you were using an unlicensed product like the intercooler.

Sir, do you really want me to point some spelling errors ?

(ok, I will correct the errors. But not the commas and so forth).

Hey, that was not the worst bunch of errors. But they are corrected :)

I've read stories of the intercooler melding to the back of the 360 where the owner was unable to take it off. I would just buy a falcon chip 360 since they come with nice HDMI ports also

Not an original idea, but what I'm doing is using a pair of those laptop surface coolers. One's underneath and one is turned upside and pointed at the top. It looks absurd, but it doesn't conflict with any existing cooling mechanism and it moves a lot of air. Also, it's powered by an external USB hub for extra safety. Remind me to post pictures of this ridiculous setup later.

By far MicJovhan, the most effective cooling without warranty void is the external 12v fan mod.

The intercooler can in some cases heat up and weld itself to the 360 and cause a short. Even the pelican models are so-so.

The best mod is to get a 12v power adapter of around 1.2 amps and
get two 70mm fans and block them together, and place them at the bottom opening of the 360.

Don't even bother with the intercooler.

I guess thats the best mod you can make without voiding the warranty;-)

Has anyone seen a X360 being watercooled? what about an external heatpipe?

And what about removing the X clamp? does it really works? or the X360 will RLOD anyway?
