Nice, can a retail DVD Drive be placed in a dev and work ?

  4. #4
Yes, a retail 360 dvd-rom will work in dev consoles.

    Great guide Chris:thumbsup:

Also I thought for a retail 360 dvd drive to work in a dev the drive would have to be unlocked, but I never tried it before.
You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe.

'Unlocked'? I have swapped drives between my XeDK's and my retail units without any issues (all three, Hitachi, Samsung, BenQ).

    Many thanks Chris. Great work!

PS: did you get back your XeDK?

Wait so you dont have to swap DVD keys on a dev?

    Also very nice indeed

Since debug games are on DVD-R (DL) media, and not on protected 360 retail discs (with a security sector and a special 360 game partition that needs to be "unlocked") the drive key is normally not needed.

The drive key only protects the ATAPI communcation for retail 360 discs.

To play retail games on a retail console, or to play retail games using hacks on a dev console, the keys need match - meaning the key in the drive firmware needs to match the key in the keyvault (in the NAND) on the motherboard.

To play normal CD-R and DVD-R (DL) discs on a retail console you don't need/use the drive key. In example you can put the files in the famous HD_DVD_10-2006.zip on a CD-R or DVD-R and they will boot even if there is a drive key mismatch. The reason is that the executables are not bound to 360 retail media like most retail executables. The famous kiosk disc is another exception...

This is a very clear explanation and should be added to the guide with an acknowledgement for 'ConsoleFun' - nicely done. First time I've seen it properly explained. ;-)

Definately the best guide of its kind, top stuff :)

...Out of curiosity, do you not have to remove one of the rubber feet on the side of the case to pop one of the clips on the side car? (Like you would have to do on a retail console)

    Stupid question:

can DVD from XeDK read backup copy on retail or the firmware is the same?

    The firmware is the same.

I think you need to firmware hack it for it to read a backup...even with retail loader (that doesnt work for me anymore)
