Today, Paul McCartney (ex Beatles member) faces his ex-wife Heather Mills McCartney in court to settle what could potentially be one of the most expensive separations in UK history. Sir McCartney is apparently valued at over £800 million.

It is reported that they are still at loggerheads (without agreement), but as the result will not be made public (and speculation being what it is), we may never know the value of the settlement, but one thing's for sure it'll be a very large sum of money indeed!

It's a shame, but 400 million is more than enough for one person so he won't suffer ultimately. Still, it seems unfair. As A. Snow said, he knew what he was getting himself into when he married her as I'm sure many told him to get it contracted.

What's British marriage law like? It varies depending on states in the US. From what I understand, in any of the states, if you can prove what you had before the marriage, that is off limits to any settlement. A fashionable thing now though is to say that you're financially liable for your partner before marriage... like say if you move in together. Heathens. Alimony is completely dependent on state.

Well it will be taken into account that the bulk of his wealth was gained prior to marrying Heather Mills McCartney. Had this been Linda McCartney, his late wife then the story would be very different. Regrettably he never made a pre-nuptual agreement, therefore they are locked into this rather bitter 5 day hearing made all the more complicated because they have a daughter (Beatrice).

The legal standing will be that they will be attempting to ensure that the level of living standard experienced by Beatrice in either parent's homes will be relatively similar.

There is no 'British' legal system as such as it is divided across Scotland, Ireland & England (I'm not sure whether Wales has the same legal system as England). Thus in the United Kingdom the moment you cross one of the borders you are either under Common Law or Roman Law and they vary considerably.

I'm not sure whether Paul McCartney is registered under English law or Scottish (as his main residence for many years was in Scotland)?

I am assuming that the legal system dealing with the divorce & settlement would be wherever the initial divorce proceedings were filed, therefore most likely Heather Mills McCartney filed in England hence the hearings taking place in London.
