i'm thinking of installing Linux on my machine preferably Ubuntu 64bit which will go along-side XP. I already have 2 partitions, one with XP and one with all my music, programs and other stuff.
Is there an easy way to take a partiton and split it up again without losing 36.1GB of data or having to move it, i can't do it wth the disk management in XP which was my first thought and i don't know anything about various software

Just install ubuntu, just before it acually starts to install it will present you will a partition manager, the new partitions will be made from your free space and on the fly without losing any data on the windows side.
The dual boot screen will be installed by default, life is really easy nowadays :)
Right thanks for that, i'm installing linux for the first time and i don't want to have it on the same partition as all my data.
is it wise to install the normal i386 version over the 64bit or does it not matter, i am dowloading them both since i have an intel EMT64 compatible proccessor.

now i really need some help, i started my comp and booted from my dvd drive and got the the Ubuntu screen (64bit) and selected start or install it then got to the loading screen with the orange bar sliding from left to right several times and when it started to load the bar didn't get a quater of the way across and my machine restarted and it was back to the main Ubuntu screen
I did quite some ubuntu installs, but never ran in to such issue's.
My guess would be that you have some hardware issue's or incompatible hardware, but if your windows runs fine on the same hardware then I am clueless what it could be to be honost.
just finished burning the normal i386 version so will try that and see what happens, never had any issues like this before with windows and i've installed windows 6-7 times or maybe more on the same hardware.
You can try to load the Ubuntu from the CD, use the partitioning program and after you sorted everything, restart and run the install. Then when it chooses which partition to install you already have everything sorted.

Can't get it load properly, get to the 1st screen and hit start or install and it begins to load and then restarts. I did a disck check and both versios of disc are error free.
I am wondering if it could be my hardware although it shouls be, I have a 2.8 Ghz intel cpu (64bit supported), 512mb ram and this should be enough to run it.
Never heard of problems like that. If you are using the 64bit version, try the normal one and see if the problems persist.
If yes, i suggest posting your problem at the Ubuntu support forums.

I have tried the normal versions which gets to ther smae point but freezes, posted over at ubuntu support forums and will try alternative cd see if that helps.
try to start ubuntu with the 2nd option(safe graphical), maybe your video adapter isn't compatible, choosing safe, ubuntu will use the VESA driver that is compatible with all graphicscards, or try other console(ALT+F1 trough F12) when booting to see where it is restarting, and maybe you can pass some kernel options
The only time I've seen this occur is on a machine with bad RAM.
Run the memory test and make sure everything's OK. You'll see lots of red warnings if it isn't (you'll need to leave it running for a little while until the line that says Passed has a 1 beside it).
Apart from that, all I can tell you is ask the Ubuntu guys as they've probably seen it before. And don't worry!
right, i downloaded the alternative 64bit and that lets me get into the install proccess but it fails at about 6% on the install software part. I now have no OS as i decided to delete windows partition so i could have a fresh install of Linux and Xp.
Currently installing XP (for about 40 billlionth time) whilst trying to work out whats going wrong wit ubuntu.
Do you find that XP bluescreens sometimes or programs crash often?
I don't really get programs crashing that often or bluescreens, its only when i am doing too much at once when programs crash.

Right, i may have found out something that would make my computer restart. i decided to open the side of my case and my cpu fan wasn't spinning as a cable had got it stuck.
Things are going from bad to worse for my computer, xp won't install now and i've got to work out why??

Probably overheated now, try and place a standalone fan or something else to cool it off while you install the OS.
i've got a stanalone fan already going and i'm trying Ubuntu again
right i finally managed to get ubuntu to install but it gets to the point of detecting/loading harware and my machine restarts
