SONY PSX DESR-5100 queries

Hello PSX owners =)

I have received a DESR-7700 from japan last week. works fine =)

but i am interested in knowing - have any of you had any luck in getting a english user manual?

or even better - changed the language on this device to english?

i also wonder, how could i put music on the harddrive (mp3?)
i see there is a Deejay program on it, but when i start it up i only get a message i dont understand....

What firmware do you have? I think mine has 1.31 (I think) and it has no DJ program on it. To insert music, I just put in a cd, pressed some buttons, I dont remember what, and the cd was being imported and saved on the hard drive.

how do i check the firmware?

you know how to import from usb, or play from usb...?

when i insert a usb it pops up in the picture menu, but not in music or movie menu :(

If you have a psp or ps3 look at its "system setting" icon, it should be similar on the psx, then in that menu go all the way to the bottom, either the very last option, or second to last.

You're lucky, My psx doesnt recognize any usb flash drives, or my psp. it also doesnt always show the memory stick in the xmb, I have to mess with it a lot to get it to recognize the memory stick.

Apparently the DESR-7XXX series has a built-in Ethernet port. Couldn't you possibly try to access some of the contents over static FTP by booting uLaunchELF off of something?

According to the description on Play-Asia, it's also compatible with FFXI. Personally, this makes me wonder if the PSX DVR records to a PSFS partition or to some other proprietary format making two different partitions exist on one drive.

They ALL have built in ethernet, including my DESR-5000. Unfortunately I think you're right, I also theorize that the PSX hard drive has multiple partitions for different functions (and by different functions, I mean the ps2 function, and the everything else function)

Also, from what I've seen on these forums and other places online, no one has actually confirmed (only speculated) that the PSX hard drive uses the same format as the PS2, and people have only guessed that it uses a custom, proprietary firmware. This would mean that even if files were acquired by means of FTP, we still wouldn't be able to use just any hard drive for lack of being able to format it correctly.

Hi guys,
briefly read throught all posts but still want to ask few questions in case someone has new information. My story is kinda similar to some guys here - I recently bought DESR-5500 as a junk item in Tokyo. Well, this time they were right and it actually doesn't work. Symptoms - shows the PSX logo and when black screen with some white blinking or so. During boot HDD light is blinking, no any unusual noise (like damaged HDD). What is also strange - i cannot switch console off by button... I have no remote by the way. So i was hoping that:

1. Someone can tell me what is the problem? HDD? Or maybe BIOS?
2. Is there any way to put PSX in recovery mode/enginering menu?
3. Anyone can get a dump of update disk, latest one? I found at lest one on redump.org
4. Anyone managed to dump HDD form working console?

It's the HDD. Months ago I asked for support (someone provide me a dump of a working harddrive). Because I wanted to analyze and provide a possible solution.

Ok,
i disassmbled my console and took disk out. I doesn't recongnise as fat or ntfs under Win 7, I have all basic info on SMART and firmware, now i'm trying to clone it with winhex.

I opened the disk in winhex, it looks like some random trash... I tried to clone it and i think it's possible, process starts. Don't know why but on my PC winhex kinda hangs for 1-2 min before start any operation.

so this is what i have in winhex:

Ok, so the final update from me i think. I remaped the bad sector in Victoria under MS-DOS sucessfully. However seems the content of the sector was lost, so as a result now on booting i clearly hear how HDD trying to access a sector without any success. Very silly Sony and very sad... So stupid to put xmb on HDD instead of flash. So as a result if you have 1 bad block on your HDD you basically can say goodbye to your PSX.

I think actually cloning a drive can help, so i encourage everyone with working harddrive to make a dump as i did. It's nothing scary and you cannot damage a drive. You can put it into read-only in winhex to be on the safe side. And you you mak a clone without any recordings on it and compress it it should be light for everyone to download it.

there is only one chance when PSX on system software upgrade time , swap another sony HDD, let it install new file on there.

Hopefully we can collate all the info we have on the PSX so repair would be more plausible. :)

I bought mine lying on few japanese surplus warehouse in PH, boy was I surprised and purchased them that instant.

We recently found out that the PSX HDD is encrypted. And it might be encrypted with keys which are unique per unit.


Since HI_Ricky had such a useful test and prove it's possible to swap the harddrive through a update disc, it could be possible that the unit just require SONY harddrives and has no binding at all.

Maybe I'm wrong, to me the PSX's HDD looks like its using a "Virtual Sony 40gb HDD" and maybe we can add some Apps (like uLaunchELF) and softmod it that way.
It may work a lot like HDDOSD and BB Navi.

I'm going to see if I can add the Capcom Vs. SNK 2 HDD data (Its make a 128mb "PP.") to my PSX and then see if I can hex edit to a PP. of the same size. Maybe its possible going to try as soon as I get my HDD Utility disc.

It is not going to work as the PSX will reject most retail PS2 MagicGate files.

Maybe your right but I'll like to try... thanks for the link, vary good info. Have you've tried any other Seagate ST3160022ACE (Most likely not at this time, right?)
Well its great to know that I can use my SONY 40GB HDD if needed.

Maybe KrHACKen can help on editing the HDD data too work on other HDDs.

P.S. Maybe the PCB from the non-working HDD, can be used on retail Seagate ST3160022ACE HDD. (If the PCB is working.)
