The Max & Parris faulty PS2 Tool tread

As the title suggests, the PS2 Tool I traded with Max in Germany has arrived with a fault caused in transit. Despite being wrapped like a child in a mothers arms, the beloved delivery companies have somehow managed to by pass all the cardboard, bubblewrap, paper and tape and cause a problem!

I'm opening this thread on behalf of Max in order to assist in helping him, but I think it might be useful as it looks like the PS2 side of the unit has either failed, is not responding for some reason or something has come loose. I am hoping to goodness it is a straight forward repair!

Max, can I ask you to post images please! Also give a brief description of the problem.

I also want to know whether you are happy to open the system and take a look?

    Parris,
    thanks for your help.

The PC side of the TOOL seems to work fine. Unfortunately the PS2 side seems to have problems. This is the screen from the multi AV out:

I cannot start any games. I tried master discs, japanese games (blue CDs) and dvd-rips. All my games are working fine with my TEST unit. When I enter the command './dsedb -r' I get the error message 'cannot connect' and the DVD drive flickers one time and the screen turns black. After a while it turns back to the image shown before. The DVD drive doesn't spin up. But I'm not sure, because the unit is very noisy.

The error 'cannot connect' also appears many times in the log of the self test:

btw, I aborted the test after a while

I opened the unit and removed the metal plate and the HDD's. I noticed that the DVD cable was in a bad position. It was directly over a fan. I put it in place between these two black 'noses'. I noticed that the DVD cable has some wear. I'm not sure if that's ok, so I made a photo:

I haven't removed any more screws. I had a look at the other cables, they seem to fit fine. I closed the unit hopefully that the DVD cable was the issue and powered it up again. Unfortunately it's still not working :(

Time for bed now. But I cannot sleep. I hope someone may help me.

the DVD drive cable was tested as I too thought it looked pretty ropey when I first opened the unit, but all contacts were perfectly fine.

that is so ...... bad :(

Do you have overall picture for the tool itself ?
Did you checked PCI cards ?

Tip - if you can do more pictures then it will be more easy to find where the problem is .

BTW what is the name of this "good" delivery company ?

Parcelforce International, which is part of Royal Mail UK. It was sent in a bomb proof box. This really shouldn't be happening.

The PCI card shouldn't move out of it's slot as it is screwed in. The multi out is actually on the main motherboard and the PCI is the Linux (PC) side, so the VGA output would be distrupted, not the AV.

I know for a fact that if you stopped the GPU & CPU fans from spinning (say for instance a cable physically stopped the fan blades from moving), then the PS2 side doesn't kick in. This is one reason cables should be tied, sealed, taped or whatever well away from the fans.

All of the internal connections were checked and tested prior to it being shipped and I even sat playing a game on it to ensure it was fine.

If it took a knock, then something might have become dislodged. I'd start with the HDD. Then dismantle the entire unit, check it over and do a rebuild. A long process, especially if you haven't taken a PS2 Tool apart before.

2 Parris , I personally dont see that you could have made these things
and from this point getting the TOOL to work is only one thing were efforts should be concentrated.

About the PCI and other stuff - it would be needed to see for any crack(s) but for me it is still hard to give more help without seen more pics.

for sure HDDs and fans might be the first items to check

just a random guess from a person that have had several HDDs die on him over just a few years:

    Maybe the HDD got damaged?

I guess what you are saying, unless I am mistaken, is that this isn't my fault?

Well, whether it is or not I am a proud person & when I make deals I trust the other person gets what they bargained for and not damaged goods! Therefore I'll do as much as I can to assist, but thanks any way!

I'm also just really disappointed as months of work appear to have been poured down the drain. My guess is that it'll take a bit of effort on Max's part to get working again and I will throw as much input into finding a solution as I feasibly can from over here.

Your software skills (and those of UJ) may prove useful before the end is in sight! ;-)

    I hope it's one of the HDD's.

I've borrowed 2 80 Gigs HDDs from a friend. I will prepare them for the TOOL. I hope the 'old' IDE bus can handle such big HDD's. Unfortunately I haven't found smaller disks in this short time:rolleyes:

I will make more photos when I'm ready with the HDD's.

I doubt it's the hdds fault.
Before the lilo prompt, there is a list of pci devices, anything wrong with it?
During the linux startup, you should see the message "Starting dsnet:"
and then an error message like the one on the picture, right?

Is the pci connector where the pci board is installed damaged?
The connectors between the backplane and the ps2 board, are they correctly in contact?

I had the same problem when I got mine, reseated everything, worked well. Nevertheless, check the serial cable going from the PCI card to the PS2 board!

common, we know each other not only by this thread ...

but I can repeat - I do believe that this is a delivery problem and only.

no error message. dsnet seems to start fine:

I unscrewed the whole unit. I noticed 2 failures (probably):

    - The DVD cable seems to have a small crack near the PlayStation2 mainboard connector.
    - The RS232 connector on the PlayStation 2 mainboard was minimal loose. But I don't think that was the issue.

The other parts fit fine because it's a screwed construction.

I have some photos. Probably you may find an issue:
