I did a rebuild of the HDD's last night. The new HDD's work fine, but that hasn't solved the problem.
The package was a bit crushed when it arrived, but no serious damage. The case has no damage.
Next, I will do a complete rebuild of the PCBs.

A: he'probably show up again when he has some nice stuff to sell, otherwise you could contact him via his online game shop.Originally Posted by Parris

Matt contacted me out of the blue a few weeks ago to offer some Sony related material. I was interested and that was the last I have heard from him. I don't like disturbing people.Originally Posted by port187

I look forward to seeing the unit up and running perfectly again.Originally Posted by mdmx

2 cents - I was just looking at the TV screenshot - may be it worth to check memory dips , like to it out and put back carefully ?
I have the TOOL mainboard in my hands. I'm a bit confused about the MultiAV Out. Pin 11,10,9 are soldered together and Pin 3,5 are also soldered together. Is that ok?
Put it this way, I never soldered or touched that part of the board so anything on it is Sony's doing not mine :-)Originally Posted by mdmx
Good to hear you have pulled the motherboard to check it without any issues. Check the earthing around the processors (on the underside). Make sure everything looks like the images posted in the guide. If you have any queries or find something, post an image!
Fingers crossed!
The earthing is ok. I checked all PCBs with a loupe. I haven't found any issues.
Fingers crossed - let me know when it's back together again and the result.Originally Posted by mdmx
Shit, I am really sorry to hear this. I don't know what to suggest other than perhaps attempting some form of compensation claim. Send me an email to the usual address and let's try and sort something out from this. I never want to send another large, fragile items of this kind abroad via ANY service again as frankly I ultimately feel crap & very much responsible.Originally Posted by mdmx
I really felt that the packaging and way it was carefully tested prior to sending the unit, you were onto a perfectly good machine with no trouble. It's been running smoothly for months. What the hell did the delivery company do to it?
Mattcp MIGHT have spare parts available. If we can pin down a likely cause, we can hopefully replace the offending part.

damn. sorry to hear you can't find what's wrong with it =/
I wonder what possible could have happened?
Time to digg out the multimeter's and oscilloscopes?
This game will make you a sociopath

PM sent (you were cc'd into it Max) to Mattcp re advice on fault and whether he had a spare motherboard.
Fingers crossed!
the main problem is we don't know which part(s) affected.
PCI card and HDDs are ok.
But we don't know if the issue is on the TOOL mainboard or the Linux mainboard or both.
I recognized a red light near the PCMCIA slot. Probably that indicates a failure?
Another hint would be the beep at the boot. I hear the beep 3 times (very silent).
I would also like to change the power supply. I know this is unlikely, but a wrong power supply (too less power) could result in an instable system.
I'm pretty sure that the power supply in the TOOL was changed sometimes. I don't think it's the original psu supplied by Sony.
Can I use a standard ATX power supply or do I need a special one? I have a 300 Watts PSU in spare which I would like to install.

Which light on the Linux board is coming up red? Can you specify exactly which one? When the system initialises the indicators slowly go from red to green as the system boots & carries out checks.Originally Posted by mdmx
The PSU might be a replacement, but I doubt it and it always provided sufficient power previously. It may have become faulty and not providing sufficient power to the boards. The owner prior to me had already cracked open the case and tinkered extensively with the unit. The 2 HDD that are inside the unit are NOT genuine Sony HDD as I had to replace them both and carry out the 2 dumps. The memory and CPU on the PCI card are also replacements. The rest of the unit is as I purchased it other than whats been mentioned in the threads here.
A constant beep at boot is a POST failure.
If more images of the unit and how it SHOULD look would be useful then I can place ALL of the images I have in my photobucket account for you. I did put a few on the instructions disc I sent.

What I find strange is that dsnet loads the driver without problem but dsedb can't connect to it...
Another thing, if your retail ps2 did have some video output problems, what would you check?
I think there are four beeps:Originally Posted by Parris
The first three beeps are very silent. it goes low, high, low. Then a small pause and the standard beep like from a PC.
LEDs INSIDE the case:
under HDDs:
LED TOOL and LED DRIVE light up red
LED OS and LED EMULATOR do not light up.
near the PCI card:
7 LEDs in a row light up green.
2 LEDs called PIC and RESET do not light up.
on the DVD controller:
I can see a led which lights up green.
under the PCI card:
there is one or more LEDs which light up red. I cannot see the LEDs. I can only see a red light trough the PCMCIA slot:

That's a test screen, which I have NEVER seen before, but is generally used on professional video equipment. I think perhaps the unit is actually booting properly, but is set to something we've not yet discussed / found in the threads.
UJ, ever seen this on a PS2 Tool before or in your instruction manual travels?
Let me set up my PS2 Tool tonight and have a proper look at this. However, it looks a bit more promising than the B&W image I initially saw.
