What's that to the left of the switch.

It looks like a hexadecimal switch (responsible for selecting the region). Stylistically, it looks like an odometer. Above and below are "-" / "+" buttons that move the option up and down. I've never seen one like that before.

That's exactly what it does Dreamcast ™ :)
You simply press the button to switch between the regions

I thought the official way of testing games was with a boot cd.

Just looks like a japanese console with a modchip & region & pal/ntsc switch to me. A mate of mine did the same thing to his saturn.

SMF - there are a number of ways of testing games depending on which stage in development you are at and of course which platforms.
Early development has testing done via actual development kits
Then testing on test kits occur and finally release discs are tested on retail kits.

Yes, but a console with a mod chip doesn't qualify as a test kit even if it was used for testing. An asset tag from a well known developer or publisher would make it interesting though. Do you have any proof of where this came from and who built it?

Unfortunately nothing concrete - the switch system on the back was manufactured by Wisher (Republic of China).
However as you say there is no distinctive SEGA TEST KIT written on it - either way it does what it needs to do and I know its from SEGA because I used to work there.
Maybe if opened up it would reveal more but I'm not that bothered heh :)

When we moved buildings they were throwing out equipment left right and center.. would not let us take the HKT 01's though - those had to be destroyed.
If you guys saw the quantity of things they threw away you would cry... GD roms , thousands of discs , hundreds of machines.

LoL, we should have a competition on these boards of who has the best picture of destroyed development units. I would start, but yeah, I don't have any.

Rarer items are more expensive, so whether you are happy or sad depends on whether you are buying or selling.

    HKT01-s through to well everything
Im sure there were source codes as well trashed
SEGA Europe did do a couple inhouse projects
    such as waste
I salvaged a Lara Croft 6 foot model - I got authorisation to take her home and I got some serious stares on the train home I can tell you holding her with breast in hand! She looked interesting standing in the corner of my room... wonder how long she will remain to be interesting (she's in storage right now lol)

There were a few Saturns modded by official Sega sources for testing purposes - I think they were meant more for review purposes than development, though. I'll see if I still have contact details for the guy who did them, and see if he can remember any more, and whether this is one of the machines he did!
