    GDC2007

GDC2007 starts this week. Although a developer orientated event, the big three are anticipated to use it to announce some big things (especially Sony, if rumours are to be believed).

With this in mind, how about some predictions?

    Official website:http://www.gdconf.com/conference/

    Here is the schedule: https://www.cmpevents.com/GD07/a.asp?option=C&V=1

Here is the "program guide": http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/cmp/gdc07/index.php

    Of most note:
Keynote: Game 3.0: Developing and Creating for the 3rd Age of Video Games (Phil Harrison)
    Wednesday, 10:30am — 11:30am
    Vision/
    60-minute Keynote
Overview: Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios will demonstrate some exclusive insights into its development of products and services that will help define future growth in the video game market

Keynote: A Creative Vision (Shigeru Miyamoto)
    Thursday, 10:30am — 11:30am
    Vision/
    60-minute Keynote
Overview: Shigeru Miyamoto is perhaps the world's most recognized video game developer, creator of industry icons like Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and Nintendogs. In addition, he is the behind-the-scenes engine of innovation for many other notable Nintendo breakthroughs.

Innovations in Fable 2 (Peter Molyneux)
    Thursday, 12:00pm — 1:00pm
    Game Design/
    60-minute Lecture
Overview: When attempting to create a sequel the temptation is to add more of everything but is this enough? Lionhead Studios ambition for Fable 2 is to create a sequel which is truly a land mark title and to achieve this there must be evolution and revolution. This talk will centre around revolutions in Fable 2. This talk will examine how key game play elements have been refined and expanded. It will also look at what inspiration was drawn for the original game and what lessons were learnt from Fable. The processes used to arrive at these design decisions can be applied to a broad spectrum of genres and so are relevant to a large sector of the development community.

Plus Peter Molyneux has promised to reveal a totally unexpected feature in Fable 2.

    (204) Microsoft Game Developer Day
    Tuesday, 9:30am — 6:00pm
    Programming/
    Full-Day Tutorial
Overview: If you are a professional game developer, don't miss this unique opportunity to hear from the experts at Microsoft about the latest in game development tools and technology. No fluff. No spin. Just in-depth technical information that will help make your titles shine on Windows Vista and Xbox 360

Presenting PLAYSTATION® Edge: Advanced Graphics Tools and Technologies for PlayStation 3 Development
Speaker: Mark Cerny (Cerny Games), Jon Olick (Lead Programmer, Naughty Dog), Vince Diesi (Principal Programmer, SCE Worldwide Studios)
    Date/Time: Wednesday (March 7, 2007) 2:30pm — 3:30pm

Three first party technology teams within Sony -- the WWS Europe Advanced Technology Group, WWS America ICE team, and WWS America Tools and Technology group -- have combined to create PLAYSTATION® Edge, a set of cutting edge technologies for imminent release to all PlayStation 3 developers. Rather than an overarching engine, these teams have chosen to create specialized systems that demonstrate best practices of SPU and RSX utilization. A unique tool for RSX performance analysis, extensively used in the tuning of first party titles, will also be presented.

    Predictions:
    "PS Home" confirmed
Naughty Dog to show off the new Rachet and Crank game (remember the 3D future city tech demo?)
Bungie show off Halo 3 progress
Killzone 2 rolling demo (to be released on PS Network also, apparently)
[edit] Heavenly Sword showpiece - Anyone see the Heros clip yet? (

I agree with the PS Home prediction, and possibly Halo 3. I think Nintendo might just give dates for a few of their titles (hopefully Phantom Hourglass, Mario Galaxy and mario Strikers). But I don't expect there to be anything groundbreaking, I just think it's too early in the year.

I expect nothing special for Fable 2, and I'll probably still be disappointed. Fable was a pretty cool game, but what Molyneux didn't bother to tell the public is that they took out everything that was promised.

I was waiting a long time for this game, ever since mario 64 it would seem. Mushroom kingdome memories all over space xD

Graphics are extremely impressive. I guess a clocked-up gamecube isn't that bad now is it lads? ;)
You can ask for any old woman
You can ask for an army of ants
You can ask for a pillar of poison
You can ask for sheep and shavers

    And you can die for

Looks great aye, but it won't be in HD. That is the biggest issue Nintendo have this new generation.

Having said that, I'm more excited about Super Paper Mario, a nice 2D ex-GC game

True. Developers never really used the full potential of the Gamecube, since most 3rd parties mostly did ports, and Nintendo themselves gave up and mostly made mario party and various mario sport rehashes (That, and the 3rd parties that made those games seemed like they wanted to get those projects done and over with).

That mario galaxy looks great, dammit now I've to buy a Wii! thank you very much shiggy! why can you be just another sloppy developer?

BTW Warhawk does look fun, although the graphics do look like something that came up in 2004. am I missing something? is thats becos of the long drawing distance? or the RSX is already showing its flaws?

PS: man mario galaxy reminds me a lot of that rouge level in sonic adventure 2 that was a bitch to get to the end. You know, the last one with the weird shaped meteors and no floor.
