    Game Gear questions....

I have a friend with two Sega Game gears, a black and a blue unit that he's thinking about selling to me, but I have a few questions.

    1) I don't relish the thought of using up 6 AA batteries, and I don't have that many rechargeables, so I think to use the thing I'd want an AC adaptor, which is not included. What's the voltage and polarity of a GG adaptor, and could I use one from any other system?

    2) Neither system has any battery covers. Are these possible to come by, perhaps on eBay or something?

    3) The main reason I'd want a Game Gear is for Gunstar Heroes on it. Does anyone know how much this tends to run in Japan, price-wise?

and for the adaptor, if anyone can't tell it before , i will go in another city this week (or next i don't know), i could pass in a shop where i know they own a game gear with an ac adaptor , i could check the voltage and the polarity for you . :smt023 ( sure , it will take la while . i'm sure that someone her could tell you faster than me the voltage and polarity , but if no one can...i the extreme case, i could.. :smt033 )

Blue one is a sports edition. For your sega game gear part go to http://www.sega-parts.com/. They have the ac adpater there and replacement parts for the battery covers. They're very reliable. Bought a genesis model 1 av cable from them and it was brand new in box!!!! Also they are officaly aproved by sega to sell replacments and such. As for gunstar best bet is yahoo jp since they'd most likely sell it, might want to try ebay also.

Yay, a good question for me to answer...

    1. No AC adapter? No problem. The Genesis 2 ac adapter works perfectly fine with Game Gears.

    2. No battery covers? Ok...you're screwed there I suppose, unless you can find some on ebay...or if Sega Parts has some.

    3. And I've got no clue on Gunstar Heroes, but I have the Genesis one, so the Game Gear one is probably pretty cool.

    Yakumo..

    Been toying with an idea.

    1. Cut the HUGE backlight (it's a cathode of sorts)
    2. Install and afterburner kit where the cathode used to be.
There's a white plastic part in front of it usually.

Without the inefficient backlight it'll probably last a LOT longer.

I'm actually working on one of these right now. The problem is
I refuse to pay $45 for an afterburner when they're obsolete and should be $10

The Game Gear is way over-slated. There are a dceent number of excellent games on the console that smack of quality. I was actually lucky enough to have my brother find a Coca Cola LE GG complete for about $12.50 CAD in Sendai, hehe.

Anyways, that being said, it would probably be a better idea to get yourself a GP32 as it can emulate the GG and then some perfectly, and it's far more portable, size-and-battery-wise, than a GG can unfortunately ever be.

If you do have to have the true retro feeling by having the GG itself in your hands, Gunstar Heroes does run a pretty penny, but if you're so inclined you could always get a GG flash card at tototek.com.

    GSL.

My local shop sell some SMS to GG Cart adaptor where you can hook up a SMS game to a game gear since its the same thing. Well I remember them having a few and possibly some official GG AC adaptors. I'll have to check the store again. They do sell some GG games. Just tell me what you're interested in looking for and I'll see if they have them and if they have that SMS-GG game card adaptor.

BTW. is $30 for the official Power Converter for the Genesis, which lets you play SMS games on the genesis, overpriced??

    1. Is tototek.com reliable...? They seem to have some pretty neat stuff.

    2. Madhatter, I've only seen one of those before here in Ohio, and I think it was priced about 30 dollars. Though rareness is relative, they certainly seem to be rare here, so 30 doesn't seem bad...but you could spend 30 bucks and get a Master system on Ebay, so that might be the way to go...if you don't have one. Then again, I'm no SMS expert...I've only ever seen one of them for sale...and even if I had bought it...I would have never been able to find games...

Thanks for all the help everyone!! I'm thinking I might go for the offer on these, as the guy wants $15 for both consoles, plus three games (not good ones, but games nonetheless).

Blur - I have a Model 1 Genesis, will the adaptor for that work?

Thanks for the link for the Sega Parts place, everyone, but sadly they don't seem to have the covers - I'll just have to watch eBay.

Also, there was indeed a Gunstar Heroes on the GG - from what I hear, it plays very similarly to the Genny version, and is really great. It's also supposed to be hard to find, expensive, blah blah blah...

And madhatter, if you have a GG and some SMS carts, I'd say get the Power Convertor, $30 isn't a bad price - not good, but not bad.

Uh oh, could be a problem...as I don't think Genesis 1 and 2 have the same plug on them...I recall getting really pissed off one night, as I wanted to play Ms Pac Man on my Genesis 1 in my room, but only being able to find Genesis 2 adapters...but...from my experience, Genesis 2 adapters are pretty common, so you'd probably be able to find one at any ol' used video game store.

I'll double check on the Genesis 1 adapter tomorrow though, but I don't think the resuslts will be good...at least it'll give me an excuse to play some Game Gear.

I've seen screenshots of gunstar for game gear and it looks pretty close to the genesis one. As for the power plug, they do differ depending on the model. Meaning theres a power plug for model 1 genesis and theres one for model 2 genesis.

    You should buy

You should buy 2 set of 6*2400mha batteries, first :smt023 .

    I bought :
    6*1100mha (3h30 on a Nomad with headphone).
    6*1800mha (5h30 on a Nomad with headphone).

And, maybe that the GG is less *power sucker* :snipe: .

That's a nice idea but like you said $45 for the afterburner is quite expensive.

    Yes...

First of all, the Game Gear uses a Genesis 2/MD2 power supply, its 10v center positive. The GG should require no more than 500mA or so. There is also an official battery pack (NiCD?) which didn't suck that bad, can't really remember 10 years since I used it...

Japanese Game Gears use a Genesis 1/all Japanese console power supply.

Instead of getting an Afterburner kit, why not just buy some white LEDs... Isn't that all an afterburner kit is??? well, that and some shiney background thing.

Gunstar Heroes for Game Gear was not released in the US.

Tototek is very reliable, their hardware is cool and they definitively deserve your support.

I don't see how you can say that a GP32 emulates GG perfectly. There's no perfect GG emulator. Beside, true GG experience is blurry experience :)
