    PS2 in widescreen?

Can anyone tell me if the ps2 does, or can, display games in widescreen. I'm looking to finally buy one now that the price will be coming down due to the release of the PS3, and it would really bug me if i have to play with bars at the side on my plasma.

    Thanks,

It does, if I remember correctly. It's somewhere in the video options when the PS2 boots without a game inserted. You'll need to change it to "16:9".

The PS2, as a rule, does not.

A few games on the PS2 do.

    They are the exception.

The vast majority of PS2 games are 4:3 only.

    :noooo:

More than that. About a third to a half will do. They tend to be the ones you'd want to play as well. Off the top of my head - FFXI and FFXII, Soul Calibur II and III, Bully, the Burnout games, the Gran Turismo games, the GTA games, most sport games, RE4, etc...

One of the primary reasons I want a widescreen telly is for my PS2 (and movies obviously).

And to that I say "wishful thinking."

Yes, you'll find big name titles on the PS2 supporting widescreen but that number is NOWHERE near 1/3, let alone 1/2 of the titles.

    Not. Even. Close.

The lack of widescreen support has been one of my biggest *gripes* about the NGC/PS2/Xbox generation of games. Having going 16:9 long ago I was more than thrilled when the X360 mandated widescreen as the "default" aspect ratio.

Thanks for the help guys. Must say that it's kinda disappointing that not all the games i want to play will be able to be played in widescreen. But checking out the list on wikipedia shows that at least a few are. I'm mostly interested in rpg's, so at least DQ8 and FF 12 are. Any idea if the upcoming Rogue Galaxy will also support widescreen?

A lot of EA games did widescreen, which is odd seeing as a lot of their PC games don't (well by a lot I mean BF2 and BF2142 :P)

No, they don't. I've gotten a widescreen hack to work on BF1942 but I couldn't changed the FOV on BF2.

My poor 2405FPW doesn't get the loving it deserves.

Alright, I was a bit optimistic, but like I said, most of the important ones are. The situation isn't that dire :)

As for Rogue Galaxy, yes, I think it is.
