Yes, but doesn't Sony file hundreds of patents a year? No doubt this is just one of many avenues they are going with their controller technology.

    Still, bleeding copycats!

I think nintendo made a mistake putting all the bets on just the wiimote, since if people dont catch on the whole "motion" gaming idea the Wii is doomed...

Instead making it an optional accesory is quite clever.

Anyway, I hope sony wont win this gen too, that would be beyond bad.

Thing is, wii is catching on & its doing what nintendo it said it would. People who were never into games are really digging the wii & its because of the motion controls.

In fact making it a optional accessory will probably doom it to failiure. Most developers are lazy & will stick to the standard sixaxis.

Lost count how many optional controllers have vanished into obscurity on both Nintendo & sony consoles.

Look I still cant see the old folks talking about the Wii in Tv, so I wouldnt say things are going on just as nintendo said they would.

Plus since day one I'm hearing all kinds of bad comments about the graphics, even when I dont really see them that outdated as others do.

If the N64 did prove something is that you cant live off hype forever...

Sorry just because you haven't seen it happening dosn't mean that it isn't.

I have witnessed it first hand. So have quite a few of my friends (both real life & online) Parents & grandparents actually showing a interest in games, & the main offender is wii sports.

Those oldies just can't get enough of that bowling.

Very true. The whole family of my girlfriend play Wii sports. Nintendo has done it again.

Yes but how many are willing to go out and buy a new title? Most of the novelty will wear off with Wii Sports imo, much like board games XP

Perhaps. But Wii play has been a considerable success for what it is, around here.

Exactly seeing as the uk is a strong sony dominated market.

Funnily enough most people had the same arguments with the ds that the novelty would wear off & most people would go for the better looking psp.

Strange how things have turned out (^_^)

Actually, at the moment I m in Athens. I ll head back to the UK on tuesday. I got some of my nintendo-wii-event items that werent for the general public, including a press kit for red steel :D

The wii is doing FINE here in Greece (For a nintendo console!) and it has a much greater image than the GC did back in the day. hats off to nintendo (NORTEC, the representative in Greece are still idiots for their bad distribution and lack of marketing.)

Yes, indeed Dot50, the problem with the Wii is that is not enough for people to "notice" it but they also have to buy it, talk about it with their friends and they have to buy it too.

In my opinion GoW will be the benchmark from now on, since is the first true nextgen title, and therefore we can say the Wii is too underpowered to survive this generation. Ergo it should've been released at least a year ago...

And importaku, I'm talking about a media frenzy not your grandparents playing with it. I could see guys watching Akira back in 1990 in AV clubs and comic shops, yet it took at least 9 years for the anime to make it into Tv and mass media.

And the PSPvsDS scenario cant be used in this situation since there's two high powered consoles out there against the Wii, and at least one has a good/great (yet not excelent) game catalog (X360) while the PSP had a subpar number of quality titles until recently, and still lacks a killer-apt.

On the other hand, the only high-end title on the Wii today is Zelda, which in fact is a GC game. The rest is not that good either, and there's nothing HOT in the near term.

In my opinion it will only reach a good sales number (during the entire generation) if nintendo cuts the price down to make it cheap enough so it can compete against toys and not consoles.

After all, Wii sports looks more like one of those mini-game gimmicks than an actual game.

gimmick or not, i ve spent more time playing multi-player wii sports than (multiplayer - in the same room, not online) XBOX 360 with a standard controller, be it any game. the amounts of fun dont compare, seriously. Physical involvment is inherently more dopamine-efficient that button mashing and adrenaline rush.

Looks like you missed the point i was trying to make with the ds.

When the ds first came out, nearly every argument was that it was gimmicky & wouldnt stand a chance, as everyone would get bored of the new features it brought & move on to more powerful consoles.

Now we have the wii going against the ps3 & the 360, and the same argument pops up. Gimmicky console ahoy hehe.

The new control method of the ds touch screen made it more accessable to new players who were confused with a ton of buttons. Now we have the wii thats trying to do the same by making it more accessable with its control method.

Thing is nintendo has proven theres a market for supposedly "gimmicky" stuff with the ds so theres no reason why it wont possibly happen again.

I love how you use the old kiddy chestnut too (extra fanboy points awarded) so its now a toy & should be priced as such to compete.

LOL really hate to break this to you but if you think any games console is some form of sophisticated piece of adult technology then your in for a shock. All games consoles are toys regardless of how the companies try to brainwash people into thinking they are something else.

Again, this is the minority situation I been talking about since I got here: we, the gamers, we are a small part of the market compared to casuals, and most of the time they'll buy whatever is trendy.

If their friends get a PS3, they'll get one no matter how crappy it is...

EDIT: I wrote this after barc0de's post, here's my reply to importaku's:

Look I did get your point with the DS, and I'll make it as clear as possible: the PSP could've loss it even against the GBA, why? becos you dont buy a console to just "have it" nor to look at it (which is what sony may have tought when they designed it) and with no games there was no reason to buy one if it wasnt for emulators, and alas sony didnt make it easy to install them, so the average joe out there cant do shit with it...

Since the Wii has outdated specs that puts the console in a position closer to some interactive toys ratter than other consoles. The "fanboys" you name were the idiots saying the GC was a toy becos of the shape and color, while it was slightly more powerful than the PS2 itself.

The Wii is simply too little, too expensive and too late, but that doesnt means it cant catch up...

The casuals also won't buy what's expensive. Which the PS3 is. Even the SONY fanboys I know think it's too expensive. The casual market isn't THAT stupid.

the ps3 only makes sense , moneywise and otherwise, to people who think that HD tvs are worth it, and will spend the extra bucks.

Then what about the iPod? you can get a MP3 player of same and ever better specs for less money, yet people go and buy an iPod no matter what other companies release.

We could say exactly the same in case the PS3 wins against the X360, and kinda if it does against the Wii, but only if the PS3remote becomes a reality.

Apple didn't have a crappy marketing team. Nor were they arrogant to the point they said something outrageously stupid nearly every day. Plus it's ultra-established and the competition barely advertises from what I've seen. At least compared to Apple.

Funny you mention it, since sony hired the same agency apple uses for their products for the PS3 ad campaign.

And with the zune the circle is complete: this PMP has the same (and sometimes better) specs than the iPod, is cheaper and has MS behind it, yet is selling like shit.

So the only thing left is trendiness: the iPod is more hip than the Zune, and for many the PS2 was more appealing than the Xbox.

Only god knows which system will end up being the "trendy" one this generation.
