    I hate rain.

After getting home from work today I had a rather nasty surprise waiting for me. I went over to my parents section of the house, and the cats (which they normally put down at night are clawing and scraping at the cellar door). Its not an odd occurance, so I ignore it and chalk it up to them wanting up for the day. It was too early..So about an hour later my father goes down there and the whole basment is flooded.

I spent 3 hours cleaning the water up with two shop vacs. It sucked, but thank god I moved my stuff out of there a long time ago.

Turns out the problem is the rain gutters. Previously we had them routed into the sewer system, but the city didnt like that and made a new ordinance that its illegal. So we set pipes down to direct the water however that somehow failed and now pretty much everything in the basment is ruined. Hurray for city planners!

Edit: Yes, my father is a machine/parts pack rat!

Look at all the rust in that floor. Complain to the city officials about this. Telling them that if it weren't for that new ordinance, you wouldn't have had this problem. Try to even get your local news station on how that law helped caused this. Looks like your basement walls need some work if rain water in like that.

That really sucks, but like you said, at least your stuff didn't get ruined, just the 'junk' that is already there.

I just want to know why the cats are forced into the basement at night.

are you allowed to route the water indirectly into the street? Are you in the suburbs?

    Maybe that is an option.

They meow outside bedroom doors otherwise. They have food down there, and bed's setup anyway. They go down willingly :P

Im looking into the ordinance now, because I really dont want to have to clean this up again.

Man, that's crazy. Is the mess all cleaned up now? When I lived at home, our garage would flood all the time due to our sump pump screwing up. It ran into the house and it was ugly...
